Why Over 10,000 Nepali Nurses Attempt NCLEX Every Year

KEY FACTS – NCLEX-RN for Nepali nurses (2026)

  • The exam: NCLEX-RN, the single licensure test required to work as an RN anywhere in the USA
  • Total cost: NPR 1,90,000 to 4,50,000 (USD 1,400 to 3,300) depending on prep method and VisaScreen
  • Where you sit it: India (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore) – there is no Pearson VUE NCLEX centre in Nepal
  • Credential step: CGFNS CES, USD 485, plus VisaScreen USD 350 if you take the EB-3 route
  • Pass rate: 47% first-time for internationally educated nurses, but well-prepped Nepali nurses pass at 80 to 95%

The NCLEX-RN is a computer-adaptive licensure exam that decides whether a nurse may practise as a registered nurse in the United States. Every nurse who wants a US RN job, whether trained in Ohio or in Kathmandu, must pass it. There are no experience-based waivers and no exceptions.

Nepal has over 115,900 registered nurses, and the domestic system cannot pay wages that match their training. Private hospitals in Kathmandu pay NPR 10,000 to 20,000 a month. A Nepali RN in the USA earns roughly NPR 60,000 to 78,000 a month net, after tax and living costs. That gap pushes over 10,000 Nepali nurses out of the country each year, with about 6,000 heading to the USA alone in FY2023-24.

This guide walks the full path: choosing a US state board, completing CGFNS credential evaluation, finding a test centre near Nepal, budgeting the true cost, preparing efficiently, and moving onto the EB-3 green card after you pass.

How Does the NCLEX Fit Into the Whole US Nursing Route?

The NCLEX is one stage in a four-part route: credential evaluation, licensure exam, English test, and immigration. Passing NCLEX gives you a US RN licence, but the licence alone does not give you a visa. You still need an employer and an immigrant petition, which we cover in the EB-3 section. Seeing the whole chain early stops you from sequencing the steps wrongly and wasting months.

CGFNS sits before the exam in this chain. The NCLEX-RN exam guide explains the test format and scoring, while the nurse pathway to the USA maps the visa side. For the money side, read the companion full NCLEX cost breakdown, which itemises every rupee. If you want a person to sequence this for you, nurse career counselling can plan your timeline against your savings.

Two English exams interact with this route. CGFNS VisaScreen for the EB-3 visa accepts IELTS Academic 6.5, while Australia and the UK demand the higher 7.0 or OET Grade B. The IELTS vs OET comparison for nurses helps you pick before you pay for the wrong test.

Step 1: Choose Your US State Board Strategically

The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) is the most popular first board for Nepali nurses. Texas has clear requirements, a 6 to 10 week processing time, no CGFNS Qualifying Exam (just the CES evaluation), and no state income tax, which saves roughly USD 5,000 to 8,000 a year versus California. The Texas application fee is USD 75 plus USD 38.25, and the required CGFNS CES costs USD 485. Established Nepali nurse communities sit in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio.

New York (NYSED) is the second most common choice. New York accepts a wider range of international qualifications and processes applications efficiently, with a fee of USD 143 plus USD 30 and a required CGFNS CES Professional Report. New York wants both the NCLEX result and verification of your foreign licence. The trade-off is state income tax and a high cost of living in New York City.

California BRN offers the highest nursing salaries in the country, with an average RN salary above USD 120,000 and strong Nurse Practice Act protections. California also has the longest processing time at 3 to 6 months, so it suits you only when your sponsoring employer is already in California, not when you want to qualify quickly and move later.

The enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) covers 41 US states. An RN licence issued by one compact state is valid in all 41 others without a fresh endorsement. Get licensed in Texas, a compact state, and you can practise in the other 40 compact states with no extra application. Your first board choice is far less permanent than it looks.

⚡ Quick facts – state boards

Texas is the standard pick: USD 113.25 in board fees, 6 to 10 week processing, no income tax, and a compact licence valid in 41 states. New York (USD 173) suits wider qualifications. California pays most (USD 120,000+ average) but takes 3 to 6 months.

Step 2: CGFNS Credential Evaluation, and What to Submit

CGFNS is the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, the body that checks whether your Nepal nursing education and licence meet US standards. This evaluation is mandatory for most US state boards. The exact product depends on the board, but most require the Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) Professional Report.

Three document streams need to start early, because the full evaluation takes 3 to 4 months. First, official transcripts must be mailed straight from your nursing college to CGFNS, not routed through you, addressed to CGFNS International, 3600 Market Street, Suite 400, Philadelphia PA 19104, USA. Second, the Nepal Nursing Council (NNC) at Maitighar, Kathmandu must send licence verification directly to CGFNS, which takes 6 to 8 weeks after you submit their fee and verification form. Third, every Nepali-language document needs a certified English translation.

VisaScreen is a separate CGFNS product, not the same as CES. If you plan to immigrate on the EB-3 visa, you also need the VisaScreen certificate, which additionally requires English proficiency at IELTS 6.5 or OET Grade B. Start CES and VisaScreen at the same time to compress the timeline rather than doing them in sequence.

⚡ Quick facts – CGFNS

CES costs USD 485 and takes 8 to 12 weeks. NNC verification adds 6 to 8 weeks, so request it on day one. VisaScreen (USD 350) is only needed for the EB-3 visa – run it in parallel with CES.

Step 3: Where Nepali Nurses Sit NCLEX Near Nepal

Pearson VUE runs no NCLEX test centre inside Nepal, so the nearest centres are in India. From Kathmandu the practical options are New Delhi, a 1.5 hour direct flight on Air India, IndiGo, or SpiceJet, with 2 to 3 Pearson VUE centres in the Delhi area; Mumbai, 2.5 to 3 hours flying with multiple centres; and Bangalore, 3 to 4 hours, popular with South India based Nepali nurses.

Book your India trip in the right order. First get the Authorization to Test (ATT) from Pearson VUE, valid 90 days. Then check centre availability at home.pearsonvue.com/nclex. Book flights and a hotel before you lock the exam date, then set the date to match your travel, because popular centres fill 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Budget NPR 25,000 to 40,000 for a Delhi trip: return flights NPR 15,000 to 25,000, one hotel night NPR 5,000 to 10,000, and local transport NPR 2,000 to 4,000.

If Indian centres are full inside your ATT window, Pearson VUE also operates centres in the UAE (Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the popular second choice), the UK, Australia, and the Philippines. A UAE trip runs roughly NPR 80,000 to 120,000 in total, which is worth it only when India has no open seats in your window.

⚡ Quick facts – test centres

India is the default: Delhi is a 1.5 hour flight, total trip NPR 25,000 to 40,000. The ATT is valid 90 days, so book the seat the moment it arrives. UAE (NPR 80,000 to 120,000) is the backup when Indian seats run out.

Complete NCLEX Cost Breakdown for 2026

The exam fee of USD 200 is only a small slice of the total. The large items are CGFNS credential evaluation, a prep course if you pick a Nepal coaching centre, and travel to India. This table lists every line item in the order you will pay it.

Two totals cover most Nepali nurses. With a Nepal prep course the grand total runs NPR 2,30,000 to 3,00,000. With online prep only it runs NPR 1,90,000 to 2,30,000, which is USD 1,700 to 2,200. The fuller scenario including VisaScreen for the EB-3 visa pushes the top end toward NPR 4,50,000, and the companion NCLEX cost breakdown maps each budget, standard, and full scenario in detail.

Run your own figures against current bank rates with the education loan matcher, since most Nepali nurses fund this through an education loan rather than cash.

Best Prep Resources: UWorld vs Kaplan vs Local Nepal Centres

UWorld NCLEX-RN (uworld.com) is the most recommended question bank worldwide. It carries over 2,000 realistic questions with detailed rationales and analytics that flag your weak areas, and a 3-month subscription costs USD 139. Begin with an assessment test, work through questions by content area, and aim for 60% or higher accuracy before your test date. UWorld runs on both mobile and web.

Kaplan NCLEX-RN pairs structured video lectures with a question bank, and its Decision Tree helps with clinical-judgment items. The full course costs USD 349 to 499 and suits nurses who prefer guided video instruction. Kaplan guarantees a pass or a refund when you complete the programme fully.

Local Nepal prep centres work best for most nurses who struggle with self-study. NPCN (NCLEXNepal.com) is the oldest centre in Asia with online and in-person options; NCLEX Horizon Nepal runs intensive classroom coaching and mock exams; The NCLEX Center Kathmandu offers flexible schedules for working nurses; and National NCLEX is known for a rigorous mock-exam programme. At NPR 90,000 to 120,000, the structure and accountability lift pass rates for self-study strugglers.

Mark Klimek audio lectures (search YouTube) are a free 14-hour supplement covering pharmacology, lab values, and high-yield nursing facts. They belong in every prep plan regardless of which paid tool you choose.

After Passing NCLEX: The EB-3 Green Card Pathway

Passing NCLEX and receiving your state RN licence ends the licensing process and begins the immigration process. Registered nurses qualify for the EB-3 visa, an employment-based permanent residency, under the Schedule A shortage occupations, which is exempt from the PERM labour certification normally required for other workers.

The EB-3 sequence runs in five moves. First, find an employer willing to sponsor your EB-3 petition; large hospital systems and international nurse placement agencies do this routinely. Second, the employer files the I-140 petition with USCIS. Third, wait for your priority date to become current, which for Nepal-born nurses currently runs 1 to 2 years. Fourth, apply for an immigrant visa at the US Embassy Kathmandu, or adjust status if you are already in the USA on OPT. Fifth, enter the USA as a green card holder.

Recruitment agencies that specialise in EB-3 for Nepali nurses include Health Carousel International, Interstaff, Visa Solutions Healthcare (VSH), and Wayne Staffing USA. Many employers cover all legal and filing fees and add a first-month housing allowance, relocation assistance, and a sign-on bonus. Get every term in writing and review all costs and obligations before signing with any agency. Compare what RNs actually take home across countries in the nursing salary comparison before you commit.

Sources & Last Verified (June 2026)

All figures in this guide were last verified in June 2026 against the official bodies named below. Exam mechanics and pass-rate data come from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), which owns the NCLEX. Credential and VisaScreen requirements come from CGFNS International. Licence verification rules come from the Nepal Nursing Council (NNC). State licensure fees come from the Texas Board of Nursing, New York State Education Department, and California Board of Registered Nursing. EB-3 and Schedule A rules come from USCIS, and test-centre availability from Pearson VUE.

Fees in US dollars are official; NPR figures use an approximate rate of 1 USD to 133 (NRB mid-rate, 2026) and may shift with the exchange rate. Confirm current fees on each authority's own site before you pay, because nursing-board and CGFNS charges change without much notice.
