Study in China from Nepal
Nepal receives 50–80 Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) seats every year, one of the most generous bilateral scholarship quotas in South Asia.
- Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) fully funds tuition, on-campus accommodation, health insurance, and pays a monthly stipend of CNY 1,500–2,500 (roughly NPR 33,000–56,000), making a degree in China possible with near-zero out-of-pocket cost for competitive Nepali applicants.
- Self-funded tuition is CNY 20,000–40,000/yr (≈ NPR 4.5–9 lakh) for bachelor's degrees, a fraction of comparable programs in the UK, USA, or Australia, and within reach of NRB-approved forex remittance limits.
- China has 45 MOE-listed universities offering English-medium MBBS programs. Many are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS); Nepali graduates must pass the Nepal Medical Council Licensing Exam (NMCLE) to practise at home, check the NMC-approved list before applying.
Financial Snapshot
All remittances require a valid NOC from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and must go through NRB-approved banking channels. CNY 1 ≈ NPR 22.5 (June 2026 mid-market rate; verify current rate at your bank before remitting).

- Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology programs at universities like Tongji, HUST, and Southeast University rank among Asia's best and admit Nepali students through both CSC and self-funded routes.
- A large and growing Nepali student community, concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu, and Chongqing, means established social networks, Nepali student associations, and Dashain/Tihar celebrations far from home.
- Geographic proximity and direct flights (Kathmandu–Chengdu, Kathmandu–Guangzhou) keep travel time and airfare manageable, and a strengthening Nepal–China bilateral relationship has added provincial-level and university-direct scholarship tracks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) and how does a Nepali student apply?
The CSC is a fully funded scholarship covering tuition, on-campus accommodation, health insurance, and a monthly living stipend of CNY 1,500–2,500. Nepal receives roughly 50–80 embassy-channel seats annually. You can apply through two routes: the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu (Type A, with a country quota) or directly to individual Chinese universities (Type B, no quota). Most successful Nepali applicants pursue both simultaneously. The embassy channel typically opens in January and closes by March–April for the September intake. Required documents include academic transcripts, a study plan, two recommendation letters, a physical examination form, and a police clearance certificate.
Do I need an NOC to study in China, and how do I get one?
Yes. The No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) is mandatory. Without it, Nepali banks cannot legally remit tuition fees, and immigration at TIA may stop you from departing. Apply online at noc.moest.gov.np after you have your university admission letter and the Chinese JW202 visa form. Processing takes 1–5 working days once all documents are verified. The NOC is also required to open an NRB-approved foreign-currency account for sending funds abroad.
Are MBBS degrees from China recognised by Nepal Medical Council (NMC)?
Partially, and this is a critical point. China has 45 MOE-listed universities offering English-medium MBBS (5+1 years). Many of these are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), which NMC uses as a reference. However, NMC maintains its own approved list of foreign medical institutions, and not every Chinese university appears on it. Before enrolling, verify your target university against the current NMC-approved list on nmc.org.np. Even with an approved degree, you must pass the Nepal Medical Council Licensing Examination (NMCLE) to practise medicine in Nepal.
How much does it actually cost (in NPR) to study in China without a scholarship?
For a self-funded Nepali student, expect to budget NPR 8–17 lakh per year all-in. Tuition for bachelor's and master's programs ranges from CNY 20,000–50,000/yr (≈ NPR 4.5–11 lakh). Living costs, on-campus room, food, transport, and personal expenses, add roughly CNY 15,000–25,000/yr (≈ NPR 3.4–5.6 lakh). MBBS programs cost CNY 25,000–45,000/yr in tuition alone. Use a current CNY/NPR rate from your bank; as of June 2026 the mid-market rate is approximately CNY 1 = NPR 22.5.
Do Chinese universities teach in English, or do I need to learn Chinese (Mandarin)?
It depends on the program. English-medium programs are widely available for MBBS, many engineering master's degrees, MBA programs, and international relations courses, particularly at universities that actively recruit international students. However, bachelor's programs in humanities, law, architecture, and traditional Chinese medicine are usually taught in Mandarin. Many universities require HSK 4 or HSK 5 proficiency for Mandarin-medium programs. Even for English-medium students, learning basic Mandarin is strongly recommended for daily life, clinical rotations (for MBBS students), and improving employment prospects in China.
What are the main intakes and when should I start preparing?
China has two intakes. The Fall intake (September) is the main one and has the widest program selection, application deadlines are typically June–July for university-direct applications and March–April for the CSC Embassy channel. The Spring intake (February–March) is available at some universities for select programs and has a November–December deadline. For the CSC scholarship, the embassy channel for the 2027 Fall cycle will likely open in January 2027 and close by March–April 2027. Start your NOC, transcripts, and recommendation letters at least three to four months before your target deadline.
Can I work part-time while studying in China?
Formally, working on an X1 student visa requires both written approval from your university and a work endorsement on your Residence Permit from the Public Security Bureau (PSB). Off-campus paid employment without this authorisation is illegal and can result in visa cancellation. In practice, some universities facilitate on-campus jobs, tutoring, lab assistance, translation, but earnings are modest. China is not a destination where part-time income substantially offsets living costs. Budget your full living expenses from savings, remittances, or scholarship stipends, and treat any on-campus work as supplementary only.
Which Chinese universities are most popular among Nepali students?
Nepali students are spread across many cities, but commonly attend: Tongji University and Fudan University (Shanghai) for engineering and medicine; Huazhong University of Science and Technology, HUST (Wuhan) for engineering and MBBS; Zhejiang University (Hangzhou) for science and medicine; Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) for language programs; Chongqing Medical University and China Medical University (Shenyang) for MBBS. Wuhan, Chengdu, and Chongqing host the largest concentrations of Nepali students and have active Nepal Student Associations.
What happens to my degree if I want to return to Nepal or migrate to a third country?
Degree recognition varies by country and profession. For Nepal, engineering degrees from Chinese universities are generally recognised by the Nepal Engineering Council (NEC) upon verification, check the NEC list before enrolling. Medical degrees require NMC approval and passing the NMCLE as explained above. For migration to countries like Australia, Canada, or the UK, a Chinese university degree is typically acceptable if the institution is listed in their national frameworks, though professional licensing boards may impose additional requirements. Always verify recognition with the relevant professional council before committing to a program.
Is there any provincial or university-level scholarship beyond the main CSC?
Yes. Beyond the national CSC quota, several other scholarship tracks are open to Nepali students: (1) Provincial Government Scholarships, provinces like Sichuan, Hubei, and Yunnan offer their own bilateral seats through agreements with Nepal; (2) University Direct Scholarships, many universities award partial or full scholarships to high-performing international applicants independently of the embassy quota; (3) Belt and Road / Silk Road Scholarships, specifically for students from BRI partner countries including Nepal, covering tuition and stipend; (4) Confucius Institute Scholarships for Chinese language and culture programs. Apply to all relevant tracks simultaneously to maximise your chances.
