Study Engineering Abroad

141 programmes · 11 countries · BSc/BA, MSc/MA, PhD, Diploma

Engineering is Nepal's second-most-popular study abroad field after CS. From mechanical and civil to chemical and aerospace, top destinations include Germany (free public tuition), the USA (deep specialisation), Canada and Australia (PR-friendly), and increasingly France and Japan for niche specialisations.

🇳🇵 For Nepali students

Nepal already produces strong civil and mechanical engineers from IOE Pulchowk, but most graduates with international ambitions move abroad for postgraduate specialisation in fields not taught well locally — aerospace, robotics, biomedical, petroleum, and renewable energy.

Why study Engineering abroad?

Nepal trains good engineers, but the deepest specialisations — robotics, aerospace, semiconductors, nuclear, advanced materials, biomedical — require labs and faculty that are simply not available domestically. An overseas Master's in these niches transforms career options.

Engineering enjoys strong global mobility. Almost every developed country has engineering on its skilled migration list. Once you have an accredited overseas Engineering degree plus 2–3 years work experience, you qualify for skilled-worker visas in Canada, Australia, Germany, and the UK with relative ease.

Average global salaries for engineers are lower than CS but stable: USD 70–95k for new graduate engineers in the US, CAD 60–80k in Canada, EUR 50–65k in Germany. Specialised fields (petroleum, semiconductor) pay 20–40% more.

Career prospects and specialisation

Civil engineers work on infrastructure projects — buildings, bridges, water systems, transportation. The biggest global employers are firms like AECOM, Arup, Bechtel, Mott MacDonald. Career progression goes from engineer to senior engineer to project manager to director over 10–15 years. Nepal's massive infrastructure pipeline (Melamchi-style projects, hydropower) means a US/UK/Australia-trained civil engineer is highly valued if you return home.

Mechanical engineering is the broadest branch — covers automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing, and HVAC. A Master's specialisation in robotics or mechatronics opens roles at Tesla, BMW, ABB. Petroleum and mining engineers earn the highest mid-career salaries (USD 130k+) but cope with cyclical demand.

Electrical and electronics engineers work on everything from chip design (Intel, NVIDIA, TSMC) to power systems (Siemens, GE) to telecoms. Semiconductor specialisation is currently the hottest sub-field globally — Taiwan and Korean firms are hiring aggressively.

Chemical, biomedical, and environmental engineers are smaller fields but with rapidly growing demand. Biomedical engineers work in medical device companies (Medtronic, Stryker); environmental engineers in renewable energy and water utilities. Pay is similar to other branches.

Costs and scholarships

Germany leads on affordability: most public engineering Master's programmes are free or charge EUR 1,500/semester. Total cost of a 2-year Master's including living: EUR 25,000–35,000. Many programmes taught in English with no German language requirement at admission.

USA varies widely: $20–30k/year at strong state schools (Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Purdue) versus $55–75k/year at private universities. Engineering Master's funding is more common than CS — many programmes offer 50–100% RA/TA positions for stronger applicants.

Scholarships open to Nepali engineering students: Australia Awards (full funding, government-priority fields), DAAD WISE & EPOS (Germany), Eiffel (France, for top universities), MEXT (Japan), Vanier (Canada PhD), Erasmus Mundus joint Master's in many engineering specialisations.

Engineering Bachelor's abroad costs more total (4 years vs 2) but you graduate with stronger credentials than postgrad-only candidates. If your IOE Pulchowk entrance was missed, an overseas Bachelor's at a mid-tier US/Canadian/Australian university is often a better long-term path than retrying IOE.

Best country for each engineering specialisation

Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace: Germany (BMW/VW/Audi/Airbus pipeline), USA (Boeing/SpaceX/Lockheed), France (Airbus), Japan (Toyota/Honda).

Civil, Structural, Construction: USA, Australia (mining infrastructure), Canada (housing/infrastructure boom), UK (heritage in this field).

Electrical, Power, Renewable Energy: Germany (renewable transition leader), USA, Denmark (offshore wind), Australia.

Electronics, Semiconductors, Computer Engineering: USA (Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley), South Korea (Samsung/SK Hynix), Taiwan (TSMC, not directly accessible from Nepal but partner programmes exist).

Biomedical Engineering: USA (leading market by far), UK, Germany, Netherlands.

Petroleum / Mining: Australia, Canada, Norway (often free, but cold), Texas (USA).

Chemical / Process Engineering: USA, UK, Netherlands, Germany.

Admissions: what universities look for

Strong undergraduate GPA — usually 3.0+/4.0 or first-class honours. Engineering admissions weight GPA more heavily than CS does because labs and quantitative coursework are graded more strictly.

GRE scores still matter at many US engineering programmes (less so at Canadian/UK/Australian/European ones). Target Q165+. Verbal less critical.

Project portfolio: any Final-Year Project (FYP), research paper, or applied work helps. Engineers who include a 2-page summary of their FYP with their application stand out.

Letters of recommendation from professors who taught you advanced engineering courses — not from general education ones. Most engineering admissions committees read recommendations carefully and dock weak generic letters.

Engineering for Nepali Students

Key things to know before you apply

NOC requirement

All Nepali students studying abroad need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Nepal's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology before applying for a student visa.

NRB forex limit

Nepal Rastra Bank allows students to remit up to $12,000 per year for most destinations (USA, Canada, Australia, EU) and $6,000 for select Asian destinations. Check the current NRB circular for your destination.

Exams required for Engineering

Frequently asked questions

Is a German engineering degree recognised in Nepal?
Yes — Germany has reciprocal recognition with Nepal's Ministry of Education for engineering qualifications. You can register with the Nepal Engineering Council after returning. The harder challenge is converting your German qualification to USA or Canada later (PE licensing differs by country) — but for working in Europe or returning to Nepal, German degrees are fully recognised.
Can I switch from civil engineering (Bachelor's) to mechanical or electrical (Master's)?
Partially yes. Many engineering Master's programmes accept students from adjacent engineering disciplines but require you to take 1–3 prerequisite courses in your first semester. Switching from civil to mechanical is common (~30% overlap). Switching to a completely different field (e.g. chemical) usually requires bridge coursework.
Do I need to learn German for engineering programmes in Germany?
For studies: no — there are hundreds of English-taught engineering Master's programmes. For internships and jobs: yes, having at least B1 German opens 4–5× more job opportunities. You can learn during your degree — most universities offer free German for international students.
What is the salary difference between civil engineer in USA vs Nepal?
USA new-graduate civil engineer: USD 65,000–80,000 starting (after taxes ~$48,000–60,000 net). Nepal entry-level civil engineer: NPR 25,000–60,000/month (USD ~2,250–5,400/year). Even after living costs, the difference is roughly 8–10× in disposable income. Returning Nepal-trained engineers from the USA typically take senior roles at NPR 150,000–300,000/month.
Is engineering more competitive than CS for getting student visas?
Generally easier, in fact. Engineering programmes attract fewer applications than CS at most universities and have higher acceptance rates. Visa officers are also typically more comfortable with engineering applicants because the career path is clearer and less suspected of being a backdoor to immigration.
