Step-by-step checklist

The Documentation Journey

Phase-by-phase document checklist — from offer letter to visa collection.

The UK Student Route (formerly Tier 4) requires a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a UKVI-licensed sponsor institution. The visa is applied for online; there's no in-person interview for most Nepali applicants.

Phase1

Documents for CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)

Apply to your UK institution and receive a CAS reference number before applying for the visa

Academic recordsTranscripts & certificates from SLC to latest — certified English copies

UK institutions accept certified copies. Notarised translations required for documents in Nepali. UCAS applicants should submit through the UCAS portal; direct applicants go through the institution's own portal.

IdentificationValid passport — min. 6 months beyond course end date

Submit a clear scan of the bio-data page. Ensure name matches exactly with your application.

Test scoresIELTS UKVI Academic (Secure English Language Test — SELT)

Most UK universities require IELTS UKVI Academic (not general IELTS) specifically. Minimum: 6.0 overall, no band below 5.5 for undergraduate; 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 for postgraduate. PTE Academic UKVI and LanguageCert are also accepted.

ATASATAS certificate (for certain STEM/sensitive postgraduate subjects)

Academic Technology Approval Scheme — required if your course is in certain advanced STEM or security-sensitive fields. Check the ATAS subject list on gov.uk. Apply well in advance as it can take 20+ working days.

SOPPersonal statement

Required for UCAS applications (4,000 characters). Postgraduate applications need a research proposal or motivation letter depending on the program.

Complete all 5 items before moving to Phase 2.
Phase2

Student Route Visa Application

Apply online at gov.uk using your CAS number — no in-person interview for Nepal

CASCAS reference number from your UK university/college

Your institution assigns the CAS number once they have confirmed your offer and you have met all conditions. The CAS expires 6 months after issue — apply for your visa promptly.

Financial proofFunds: £1,334/month for London; £1,023/month outside London (up to 9 months)

For a 9-month course outside London: £9,207 in your bank for a consecutive 28-day period. For London: £12,006. Funds must have been held for at least 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before your visa application date.

Healthcare surchargeImmigration Health Surcharge (IHS) payment receipt — £776/year

Pay the IHS when completing your online visa application. This gives access to NHS during your studies. IHS cost is separate from and in addition to your visa application fee.

Complete all 4 items before moving to Phase 3.
Phase3

Supplementary Financial Documents

Strengthen your application with full financial evidence package

Bank statements28 consecutive days of statements (ending ≤31 days before application)

This is strict — dates matter. The 28-day period must show the required balance every single day. Use statements from an NRB 'A' class Nepal bank or an international bank (NABIL, Standard Chartered Nepal are commonly accepted).

Loan letterEducation loan sanction letter (notarised, certified English translation)

Must be on bank letterhead, state the amount, purpose, and repayment terms. If the loan covers your living costs, this can substitute for personal savings.

SponsorshipSponsor letter + sponsor's bank statements + employment letter

If a parent or relative is sponsoring you, provide: their bank statements covering the same 28-day window, an employment/income letter, and a signed sponsorship declaration.

GovernmentMoEST NOC — MANDATORY for Nepali students

While UKVI does not explicitly list the NOC in their published requirements, Nepali students must hold a valid NOC for NRB forex remittance and are expected to carry it. Obtain at least 4–6 weeks before departure.

Nepal-specific — MoEST NOC required
Complete all 4 items before moving to Phase 4.

28-day rule is inflexible

The UK's 28-consecutive-day bank balance requirement is one of the most common reasons for visa refusals. The funds must be present on every single day of the 28-day window. Do not withdraw or transfer large amounts during this period. Plan your timeline carefully — the 28-day window must end no more than 31 days before you submit your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I study in the UK?

The UK offers highly ranked universities, with four institutions in the global top ten and many in the top hundred. Degrees are shorter than in most countries: three years for a bachelor's and one year for a master's, which cuts both tuition and living costs. UK qualifications are recognised by employers worldwide across every sector. After graduating, the Graduate Route gives you two years of open post-study work (three for PhD), with no job offer needed. As an English-speaking country with over 10,000 Nepali students already enrolled, the UK has established support networks that make settling in straightforward.

How much does it cost to study in UK?

Total cost depends heavily on your university and city. A one-year master's typically costs £30,000 to £55,000 including tuition and living, while a three-year bachelor's costs £80,000 to £150,000 in total. Tuition for international students runs £15,000 to £35,000 per year. Living costs are around £1,200 to £1,800 per month in London and £800 to £1,200 outside London. You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year for NHS access. Studying in affordable cities such as Sheffield, Leeds, or Belfast and winning scholarships can reduce your overall costs by 30 to 50 percent.

Can I work after graduation?

After completing your UK degree, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa, 2 years of open work permission for bachelor's and master's graduates, 3 years for PhD graduates. From January 1, 2027, non-PhD graduate visas will reduce to 18 months, so students applying in 2026 should apply before that date to secure 2 full years. The Graduate Route allows you to work in any sector without employer sponsorship, switch jobs freely, or even start your own business. After the Graduate Route, you can transition to a Skilled Worker visa with an employer sponsoring you.

What are top universities in UK?

Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, LSE, and UCL lead the rankings, with Edinburgh, Manchester, and Bristol close behind. These belong to the Russell Group, the UK's 24 research-intensive universities that consistently appear in global top-100 lists. Beyond the very top, many Russell Group and post-1992 universities are excellent for specific subjects: Warwick and Bath for engineering, Loughborough and Surrey for STEM, LSE for economics. For Nepali students, Manchester, Birmingham, Hertfordshire, and Coventry are particularly popular because they combine strong programmes, large Nepali communities, and more accessible admission criteria than the most competitive institutions.

Is UK expensive compared to other countries?

The UK can work out more affordable than the US or Canada because degrees are shorter, three years for a bachelor's versus four, and one year for a master's versus two. This shorter duration cuts both tuition and living costs substantially. However, costs vary widely by city. London is expensive, with living costs of £1,200 to £1,800 per month, while Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, and Belfast run £800 to £1,200. Choosing an affordable university outside London in a lower-cost city can make a complete UK degree 40 to 50 percent cheaper than a London Russell Group programme while still giving you full Graduate Route eligibility.

Are scholarships available for international students?

Yes, scholarships are widely available. The flagship Chevening Scholarship from the UK government fully funds a one-year master's, covering tuition, living, airfare, and visa fees. Commonwealth Scholarships fund development-focused master's and PhD study, and Nepal qualifies for both. GREAT Scholarships from the British Council provide £10,000 toward tuition at around 70 universities. Almost every university also offers merit awards of £2,000 to £15,000, with some offering 25 to 50 percent fee reductions. Apply early, Chevening opens in August and closes in early November, and you can hold applications to several scholarships at once since they are not mutually exclusive.

What is the Graduate Route visa and how long does it last?

The Graduate Route is the UK's post-study work visa for international graduates of UK universities. After completing your degree, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa which allows you to live and work in the UK without employer sponsorship. Duration: 2 years for bachelor's and master's graduates; 3 years for PhD graduates. Important 2027 change: for applications made on or after January 1, 2027, the duration for non-PhD graduates reduces from 2 years to 18 months. This means students graduating in 2026 and applying by December 31, 2026 still receive the full 2 years. The Graduate Route is open-ended, you can work in any sector, switch employers freely, and even pursue further studies. It is a key reason why UK is popular with Nepali students.

Can my spouse or family join me when I study in the UK?

Since January 2024, the UK government significantly restricted student dependant visas. Currently, only students enrolled in postgraduate research programs (PhD and research-based master's programs) or government-sponsored students can bring dependants to the UK. Students on taught master's degrees (e.g. MSc, MBA, MA) and undergraduate programs can no longer bring spouses or children as dependants under the student visa. If your partner wants to join you in the UK, they would need an independent visa route (such as a skilled worker visa if they have a UK job offer, or a visitor visa for short stays). This policy applies to new applications, it does not affect existing permission granted before January 2024.

What funds do I need to show for a UK student visa in 2026?

From November 11, 2025, the required maintenance funds increased. You must show: (1) Tuition fees for your first year, the full amount as stated on your CAS; plus (2) Living costs: £1,529 per month if studying in London, or £1,171 per month if studying outside London, for up to a maximum of 9 months. Total maintenance requirement: £13,761 if studying in London (£1,529 × 9), or £10,539 if studying outside London (£1,171 × 9). These funds must be held in a bank account for 28 consecutive days, ending no more than 31 days before your visa application date. Education loan approval letters from reputable institutions are accepted alongside bank statements.

What IELTS score is needed for a UK university and student visa?

UK visa requirements and university admission requirements are separate. For the UK student visa (Student Route), you need an English language test from a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) approved provider, IELTS for UKVI Academic is most common. The minimum score is IELTS 4.5–6.5 overall depending on the course level. For actual university admission, requirements are higher: undergraduate degrees typically need IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0 (with no band below 5.5); master's degrees typically need IELTS Academic 6.5–7.0 (with no band below 6.0); top Russell Group universities (Oxford, LSE, UCL) may require 7.0–7.5. Always check both the visa requirement AND your specific program's requirement, the higher of the two applies.
