Study Computer Science & IT Abroad
200 programmes · 11 countries · BSc/BA, MSc/MA, PhD
Computer Science remains the #1 field for Nepali students going abroad — strong starting salaries, clear visa-to-PR pathways in Canada and Australia, and the highest scholarship density of any field. Whether you want to build software in Silicon Valley, do AI research in Germany, or work in Korean tech, there is a CS programme that fits.
🇳🇵 For Nepali students
Nepali CS graduates from accredited overseas universities consistently report starting salaries 8–15× a typical Kathmandu IT salary. Most countries grant work-permit pathways (USA OPT/H-1B, Canada PGWP, UK Graduate Route, Australia 485 visa) that let you recoup tuition within 2–3 years of graduation.

Why study Computer Science abroad?
Demand for software engineers, data scientists, and ML specialists keeps growing globally. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 26% growth for software developers through 2033 — far faster than average. Similar shortages exist in Canada, Germany, and Australia, where governments actively prioritise tech immigration.
Salaries for CS graduates are among the highest of any undergraduate field. A new graduate working in mid-tier US software companies earns $110,000–140,000; at top firms (Google, Meta, Microsoft, Stripe), $160,000–200,000 in total compensation including stock and bonus. Canada and Australia start lower — CAD 70–95k and AUD 75–105k respectively — but cost of living and tuition are also lower, so net savings remain strong.
Beyond money, CS abroad gives you access to research and engineering depth that Nepali universities cannot match: GPU clusters, named professors, internship pipelines to global firms, and peers who push you. Even if you return to Nepal after graduating, a CS degree from a recognised university opens doors to remote roles paying USD that no domestic degree can match.
Career prospects: what CS graduates actually do
Software engineer (backend, frontend, full-stack) is by far the most common path. Most CS graduates work for product companies, startups, or consultancies for the first 3–5 years building web apps, mobile apps, or internal tools. Typical career ladder: Software Engineer → Senior SWE → Staff/Tech Lead → Engineering Manager or Principal Engineer over 8–12 years.
Data engineering and ML engineering have exploded since 2020. These roles pay 10–20% premium over generic SWE roles. A Master's in CS with a data/ML specialisation is the fastest route — many Nepali graduates pick UC San Diego, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, or TU Munich for this.
Specialised paths include security (Mandiant, CrowdStrike), DevOps/SRE (Google, Netflix), embedded systems (Tesla, NVIDIA), and quantitative finance (Jane Street, Citadel — much higher pay, harder to break in). Research roles at FAANG labs or universities require a PhD; the path is competitive but well-funded.
Common career mistake: choosing a programme purely on rank without checking the surrounding tech ecosystem. A solid CS degree from Université Grenoble Alpes in a small French town gives fewer internship options than a mid-tier US university near a tech hub. Location of the university matters as much as its reputation for first jobs.
Costs, scholarships, and ROI
USA: $45,000–75,000 per year for a Master's at a private university; $30,000–45,000 at a state university. Top-tier programmes (Stanford, CMU, MIT) cost $70k+ but median first-year compensation often pays for the entire degree.
Germany: EUR 0–3,000 per year tuition at public universities for international students (since 2017, Baden-Württemberg charges EUR 1,500/semester for non-EU; most other states are still free). Living costs EUR 12,000–14,000/year. Total 2-year Master's: under EUR 30,000.
Canada: CAD 22,000–55,000/year tuition; CAD 15,000–18,000 living. Public universities (Waterloo, UBC, Toronto, McGill) are heavily oversubscribed but excellent value.
Australia: AUD 35,000–55,000/year tuition; AUD 22,000–28,000 living. Group of Eight universities are the strongest for CS. Many offer 25–50% merit scholarships to Nepali students with strong GPA.
Scholarships specifically open to Nepali CS students: Knight-Hennessy (Stanford, all fields), Fulbright FSP, GKS South Korea, DAAD EPOS, Erasmus Mundus joint Master's (multiple — EMJMD CCC, BDMA, IT4BI), Aga Khan ISP (need-based, postgrad).
Choosing the right country for CS
Pick USA if you want the absolute strongest salaries and access to the most competitive tech firms — and you can afford the upfront cost or get heavy funding. Be aware of H-1B uncertainty and increasingly tight student visa scrutiny for Nepali applicants.
Pick Canada if PR is a priority. The CS-to-Express-Entry pipeline is the most reliable in the world. Lower salaries than USA but lower costs, and immigration outcome is predictable.
Pick Germany if you want a free or very low-cost degree and don't mind learning some German for jobs (many tech jobs at SAP/Siemens accept English-only candidates, but career growth is faster with B1+ German).
Pick Australia for a balanced mid-cost option with a clear PR path and pleasant lifestyle. Tech jobs concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne.
Pick Ireland if you want to work for FAANG in Europe and don't have UK university budget. Great for Master's, fewer Bachelor's options.
Avoid: programmes from unknown universities in tier-3 cities, regardless of which country. CS is one of the few fields where the brand of the university matters significantly for getting that first internship.
Requirements and how to apply
Bachelor's in CS or related field for Master's admission (some programmes accept other engineering/math degrees with a bridge programme). Minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA at Bachelor's for most ranked schools.
GRE is no longer required at most US Master's programmes (since 2020). IELTS 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL 90–100 typical. Some programmes (CMU, Stanford, ETH Zurich) ask for additional technical exams or coding interviews.
Strong portfolio matters more than rank for many countries. A GitHub with 2–3 substantial projects, ideally one open-source contribution, beats a generic 4.0 GPA with no projects. Internships at TCS, Wipro, or local Nepali startups count.
Application timeline: target 12–18 months before intake. USA Fall deadlines are December–January. Canada/Australia accept rolling applications but earlier is much better for funding. Germany has hard deadlines (15 January for Summer, 15 July for Winter).
