PTE AcademicPearson Test of English Academic

PTE Academic is the Australian-leaning alternative to IELTS. Computer-marked from start to finish, results in 2 working days, and a strong reputation in Australia, NZ, and increasingly UK universities. Nepali students who plateau on IELTS speaking often try PTE next because the scoring algorithm is different and rewards different things.

How PTE differs from IELTS

Computer marks everything, including Speaking. You speak into a headset and an AI assesses fluency, pronunciation, and grammar against trained reference patterns. Some candidates love this (no examiner mood to worry about), others hate it (the AI can be quirky about accents).

Total test time is about 2 hours. Three sections: Speaking and Writing combined (54 to 67 minutes), Reading (29 to 30 minutes), and Listening (30 to 43 minutes). Many tasks are integrated โ€” for example, you read a paragraph then summarise it in spoken form. The format is different enough from IELTS that you cannot just walk in cold; expect 1 to 3 weeks of format-specific prep even if your English is at the level you need.

Results come in 2 working days, with one day being typical. Score sending to universities is online and instant. Compared to IELTS (paper version takes 13 days) and TOEFL (4 to 6 days), PTE is the fastest option to send results to universities.

PTE in Kathmandu and across Nepal

Pearson VUE runs PTE at the Bhrikuti Mandap PTE Test Centre in Kathmandu. The centre runs PTE on most working days. Slot availability is generally better than IELTS in Kathmandu because demand is concentrated in Australia-bound applicants.

Outside Kathmandu, PTE centres run in Pokhara and Biratnagar through Pearson partner centres. They have fewer slots and you may need to travel. Some Nepali candidates also fly to Delhi or Kolkata for PTE if their Kathmandu attempts have failed and they want to retest fast โ€” but that is unusual.

Fee can be paid by international card on the Pearson PTE website. Pay attention to the booking deadline: bookings close 48 hours before the test slot, and last-minute slots are rare.

Score requirements for Australian, UK, NZ universities

Australian universities widely accept PTE for admission and the Australian Subclass 500 student visa accepts PTE 42 overall (or 50 for higher visa risk countries โ€” Nepal is currently classified as moderate). Postgraduate admission usually wants 58 to 65; top universities like Melbourne and Sydney sometimes want 65 to 73.

UK universities accept PTE Academic (the UKVI variant is different โ€” make sure you book the right one). PTE Academic UKVI is required for any UK visa application. Universities themselves want 51 to 65 for most postgraduate programmes; UCL, Imperial, Edinburgh often want 65 to 70.

NZ universities accept PTE for both admission and the student visa. Otago, Auckland, Victoria want 58 to 65 for postgraduate work.

Canada acceptance has grown since 2023 when PTE Core was approved for the Student Direct Stream visa. Note: PTE Core is a different test from PTE Academic. For Canadian SDS, you must book PTE Core, not PTE Academic. The two have similar formats but different scoring scales.

Why some Nepali candidates score better on PTE than IELTS

Speaking is the most common reason. The PTE Speaking algorithm rewards clear pronunciation, even tempo, and consistent volume. It does not penalise unusual accents the way human IELTS examiners sometimes do (subconsciously or not). Nepali candidates whose IELTS speaking scores plateau at 6.0 to 6.5 often hit 65 to 70 on PTE without changing their English ability โ€” just by understanding what the algorithm looks for.

Reading and Listening are arguably harder on PTE than IELTS. The integrated tasks (read-then-speak, listen-then-write) demand multitasking that IELTS does not test. If your English is shaky on integration, PTE will expose it.

Writing on PTE is similarly tough. The Summarize Written Text task asks you to compress a paragraph into one 5 to 75 word sentence โ€” that single skill traps many candidates who write well in longer formats.

Preparation strategy

Pearson's official scored practice tests (USD 39 each) are the only practice materials that give accurate scores. Take at least 2 full scored practice tests before booking the real exam.

Templates work on PTE in a way they do not work on IELTS. Because the AI looks for structural markers, having a memorised 4-sentence template for Repeat Sentence or Describe Image gets you predictable scores. Most Kathmandu prep institutes that teach PTE will give you template books. Use them but practise them until they feel natural โ€” robotic templated responses cap your score at 65 to 70.

PTE Tutorials, E2 Test Prep, Jay (TheMostro) on YouTube โ€” all reliable free resources. Avoid Telegram groups that share 'real questions' โ€” many are fake, and even when they are real, Pearson detects and cancels scores from candidates who use leaked content.

Validity and retakes

PTE scores are valid for 2 years for admission and 3 years for some Australian visa categories. Check your specific use case on the official PTE website or with your visa officer.

Retake whenever you want. There is no waiting period and no maximum number of attempts. Most Nepali candidates who retake see meaningful improvement on the second attempt because they understand the format better. Plateau usually hits by attempt 3 or 4.

You can send scores to unlimited universities for free for two years after taking the test. This is more generous than IELTS (where you get 5 free reports and pay for more) or TOEFL (4 free at booking, USD 25 for extras).

Questions Nepali students ask about PTE Academic

Is PTE accepted as widely as IELTS by universities?

In Australia, NZ, and UK: yes. In the USA: PTE is accepted at most universities but a small number (~10 percent of US schools) only accept TOEFL or IELTS. In Canada: yes for university admission, and now for SDS visa via PTE Core. In Germany, France, and the Netherlands: acceptance is patchy and you should check programme by programme.

I have plateaued on IELTS speaking at 6.0. Will switching to PTE help?

Often yes, especially if your accent is part of why a human examiner is downgrading you. PTE judges on pronunciation, fluency, and grammar without subjective accent judgments. Many Nepali candidates who hit IELTS 6.0 in speaking score 65 to 75 on PTE speaking with the same level of English. But if your underlying English is genuinely at 6.0 (limited vocabulary, weak grammar), PTE will reflect that too. Take a free PTE practice test to see where you really stand.

Can I use PTE Academic for the Canada SDS visa?

No. SDS specifically requires PTE Core, not PTE Academic. They are two different tests with different formats and scoring scales. PTE Core launched in late 2023 and has fewer Nepal centres than PTE Academic. Confirm with the centre that they offer PTE Core before booking.

What is the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI?

Identical content, identical scoring. The difference is the secure delivery format (UKVI has additional identity verification). UK Visas and Immigration requires you to take PTE Academic UKVI for any UK visa application. If you take regular PTE Academic, your scores can still be used for UK university admission but not for the visa itself. The fee is slightly higher for UKVI.

How are PTE scores compared to IELTS by universities?

Rough conversions: PTE 50 to 53 equals IELTS 6.0. PTE 58 to 64 equals IELTS 6.5. PTE 65 to 72 equals IELTS 7.0. PTE 73 to 84 equals IELTS 7.5. Pearson publishes an official equivalency table that universities use. A few universities set PTE cutoffs that are slightly harsher than the IELTS equivalent, so check programme-specific requirements.

Is PTE harder or easier than IELTS overall?

Different, not strictly harder or easier. If you struggle with reading speed, PTE is harder (faster pace). If you struggle with speaking confidence, PTE is easier (computer, no examiner). If you have strong grammar and pronunciation but weak fluency, PTE rewards you more. The right test is the one that plays to your strengths. Many Nepali candidates take a free practice test of each and pick based on which they score higher on.
