Verified 2026-06-12🇦🇺Australia guide
Quick summary

Australian universities run two main intakes: Semester 2 2026 (July–August, still open for applications at some universities) and Semester 1 2027 (February–March, deadline October–December 2026). For Semester 2 2026, act now, most university deadlines are May–June 2026. After receiving your offer, you need 6–10 weeks to get your CoE, pay OSHC, and obtain your student visa before departure.

Australia's Two-Semester System

Australian universities primarily operate on a two-semester academic calendar. Semester 1 runs from late February to late June. Semester 2 runs from late July to late November. A smaller number of universities (including Bond University and some TAFEs) use a trimester system with an additional November intake.

Unlike Canadian universities where September is the dominant intake, Australian universities have two equally well-resourced intakes, Semester 1 (February) is slightly larger, but Semester 2 (July) offers full access to most master's and bachelor's programs, particularly in IT, Business, Engineering, and Nursing.

Semester 2 2026 (July), Act Now, Deadlines Are Closing

For Semester 2 2026 (starting July to August 2026), most university application deadlines fall between March and June 2026. As of May 2026, many universities are still accepting applications for July entry, especially for Master's programs. Check your shortlisted university's website immediately as some competitive programs (e.g. Melbourne Master of IT, UNSW Master of Professional Accounting) may have already closed.

Realistic Semester 2 2026 timeline from May 2026: Apply now (May to June) then receive conditional offer within 1 to 2 weeks, submit documents and pay deposit (May), receive Confirmation of Enrolment/CoE (May to June), apply for student visa via ImmiAccount (May to June), receive visa decision (June to July), depart Nepal, and arrive for orientation (late July). Allow a minimum of 10 to 12 weeks from application to departure.

3

Semester 1 2027 (February), Plan Now for the Best Options

For Semester 1 2027 (starting February to March 2027), most university application deadlines fall between October and December 2026. Group of Eight universities and competitive IT/Engineering programs typically close by October to November 2026. Apply 4 to 5 months early to maximise your options.

Semester 1 is the larger of the two intakes, more programs start, more scholarship rounds open, and social integration is easier as more new students arrive together. If you are targeting the Australia Awards Scholarship or university merit scholarships, Semester 1 applications are typically tied to this intake.

4

November Intake (Select Universities)

A small number of Australian institutions, including Bond University (which operates on a trimester calendar) and certain TAFE providers, offer a November/trimester 3 intake. This is not available at most public universities and is not recommended for first-year students due to limited on-campus orientation and community.

TAFEs (TAFE NSW, TAFE Queensland, Box Hill, Holmesglen) typically have rolling enrolments with February and July as main entry points, plus mid-year flexibility. If you are starting with a TAFE Diploma as a pathway to university, check TAFE intake dates separately.

12-Month Semester 1 2027 Action Plan (Starting May 2026)

May to June 2026: Finalise your study plan, shortlist 3 to 4 universities and programs, check QS rankings, tuition fees (AUD), and 485 visa eligibility. Sit IELTS or PTE if you haven't yet. Complete your MoEST NOC application (takes 2 to 3 working days, apply fully online at noc.moest.gov.np, no office visit required). Start your Genuine Student (GS) statement draft.

July to September 2026: Apply to universities. Submit complete applications with transcripts (English-translated and attested), IELTS/PTE scores, and a strong Statement of Purpose (the GS statement). Pay application fees (most AU universities charge AUD 0 to 100 for international applications). July is also when Australia Awards Scholarship results for the previous cycle are announced, note outcomes for the next round.

October to December 2026: Receive conditional and unconditional offers. Accept your preferred offer, pay the deposit (AUD 2,000 to 10,000), and request your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Purchase OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover), your university will usually arrange this, costing AUD 600 to 900/year. Lodge your Subclass 500 student visa application on ImmiAccount with your CoE.

January to February 2027: Receive your student visa (processing takes 4 to 8 weeks from lodgement). Book flights. Complete pre-departure steps: open a bank account (ANZ, CommBank, Westpac all have student account offers), arrange temporary accommodation (university residence or homestay for first 2 weeks), and activate your OSHC.

After You Apply: Offers, CoE, and Visa

Australian universities issue two types of offers: a conditional offer means entry requirements are met but English scores or transcripts are pending; an unconditional offer means all requirements are satisfied and you can proceed to pay your deposit and request the CoE. Most Nepali students receive a conditional offer first.

The Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is the official document from the university confirming your enrolment for a specific program and period. You cannot apply for the student visa without the CoE. Universities typically issue the CoE within 1 to 2 weeks of receiving your deposit and OSHC confirmation.

Student visa processing time from Nepal is typically 4 to 8 weeks for straightforward applications. Nepal students (non-streamlined pathway) should allow 8 to 10 weeks to be safe. Apply online via ImmiAccount, there is no Australian embassy interview required.

Frequently asked questions

Which intake is better for Nepali students, Semester 1 or Semester 2 2026?

For 2026, only Semester 2 (July) is still available, because Semester 1 2026 (February) has already started. If you want to begin in 2026, apply immediately for July 2026 entry, as some universities still have open applications as of April to May 2026. Looking ahead, Semester 1 (February) is generally the stronger intake because more programmes start, more scholarship rounds open, and social integration is easier as a larger cohort of new students arrives together. Semester 2 (July) still offers full access to most IT, business, engineering, and nursing programmes, so it is a solid choice if you are ready now rather than waiting eight months.

Is it too late to apply for Semester 2 2026 (July)?

Not necessarily. As of April to May 2026, many universities are still accepting Semester 2 2026 applications, especially for postgraduate programmes, though some competitive courses such as the Melbourne Master of IT and UNSW Master of Professional Accounting may have already closed. Apply as soon as possible and aim to have your Confirmation of Enrolment by the end of May so you allow enough time for the 4 to 8 week visa processing before a late-July orientation. Build in buffer time for biometrics at VFS Global Kathmandu and any document requests. If July deadlines have passed for your shortlist, pivot to planning a strong Semester 1 2027 application instead.

Do all Australian universities offer a Semester 2 intake?

Most do, but course availability varies by programme. All major business, IT, engineering, and nursing master's programmes are typically available in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Some specialised bachelor's programmes, cohort-based courses, and certain health science degrees only admit in Semester 1 because of placement and sequencing requirements. Always check the specific programme's intake availability on the university's course finder before you commit, rather than assuming July entry is open. If your preferred course only runs in February, you can either wait for Semester 1 or choose a closely related programme that does offer a July start, then transfer if the university allows it.

How long does it take to get admission to an Australian university?

Most Australian universities process international applications within 1 to 3 weeks for postgraduate entry and 3 to 5 weeks for undergraduate entry, provided your application is complete with transcripts, English scores, and supporting documents. Conditional offers often arrive within 5 to 7 business days of submitting a complete application, while the unconditional offer follows once you meet any outstanding conditions such as final English scores. After you accept and pay your deposit, the Confirmation of Enrolment is usually issued within 1 to 2 weeks. Build the full sequence into your plan, since the offer and CoE must come before you can lodge your Subclass 500 visa, which itself takes 4 to 8 weeks.

How far in advance should I apply for Semester 1 2027?

Apply by October to November 2026 for Semester 1 2027 entry, and ideally 4 to 5 months ahead to keep your options open. Competitive programmes, such as Go8 IT and engineering courses or Master's degrees at Monash and UTS, may close applications as early as September 2026. Scholarship applications have separate, earlier deadlines: the Australia Awards Scholarship opens in February and closes in April for the following year's intake, so plan that timeline independently. Applying early also gives you breathing room to sit or retake IELTS, gather attested transcripts, complete your MoEST NOC, draft a strong GS statement, and allow 4 to 8 weeks for visa processing before orientation.
