Why Study a Bachelor's in France?

France offers one of the world's most remarkable value propositions in higher education: world-class universities at near-zero tuition. French public universities charge just €2,770/year for non-EU international students — and with the Bienvenue en France programme exemption, eligible students pay only €243/year, the same as French students. Combine this with living costs of €8,000–12,000/year in regional cities, and a French bachelor's degree costs less than a single semester at a US university.

French higher education is globally respected. Sciences Po Paris, HEC Paris (Grandes Écoles), and Sorbonne University have centuries of academic reputation. France ranks 2nd globally for the number of top-100 QS-ranked universities behind only the USA and UK. A French Licence or Grande École degree is recognized by employers across Europe, the Middle East, and increasingly in Asia — particularly in engineering, business, and sciences.

After completing a degree in France, graduates receive the APS (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) — a 1-year open work permit allowing any employment in France while searching for a graduate role. With strong French language skills (B2 or above) and a French degree, employment in France and the French-speaking EU job market becomes genuinely accessible. France also offers the French Tech Visa for startups and Talent Passport for skilled workers.

Types of French Bachelor's Programs

The Licence (L1–L2–L3) is France's 3-year bachelor's equivalent offered at 70+ public universities. Taught primarily in French, requiring minimum DELF B2 language proficiency. Tuition: €2,770/year standard; €243/year with Bienvenue en France exemption. Fields available: sciences, humanities, law, economics, management, languages, arts, and more. Major universities: Sorbonne (Paris), Lyon 2, Aix-Marseille, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Montpellier.

Grandes Écoles (preparatory + 3-year program): France's elite institutions for engineering (Polytechnique, CentraleSupélec, Mines ParisTech), business (HEC Paris, ESSEC, EDHEC), and political science (Sciences Po). Entry via competitive exam (Concours) after 2-year preparatory classes (Classes Préparatoires) in France — nearly impossible for international students to access directly from Nepal. However, Sciences Po Paris has a direct international admission track at the bachelor's level: 3-year Bachelor in Arts and Sciences, partially English-taught, €14,000–15,000/year tuition, highly competitive.

Licence Professionnelle (LP): a 1-year professional bachelor's program for students who completed 2 years of higher education (Bac+2). Vocational, career-focused — strong in technology, commerce, and management. Available at IUT (Instituts Universitaires de Technologie) and universities. DUT (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie) is a 2-year technically-oriented qualification offered at IUT campuses, covering fields like IT, civil engineering, electronics, business, and biological technology.

Entry Requirements from Nepal

French universities accept NEB +2 (Class 12) for Licence L1 entry. Grade requirements: competitive programs at Paris universities (Sorbonne, Paris-Saclay, Université Paris Cité) typically require 70%+ in +2 and strong language scores. Regional universities (Lyon, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Strasbourg) are more accessible at 60–70%+. Sciences Po International Bachelor's requires top +2 grades (85%+) and a rigorous 3-round selection process.

Language requirements: DELF B2 minimum for French-medium Licence programs. C1 is strongly recommended for competitive programs in law, political science, or literature. DELF B2 requires approximately 600–900 hours of French study from zero — 12–18 months of dedicated learning. Alliance Française in Kathmandu (Thamel) and Institut Français du Népal (IFN, Lazimpat) offer certified DELF preparation courses. For English-medium tracks, IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79+ is required.

Campus France Nepal registration is mandatory for all Nepali students applying to French higher education. Register at nepal.campusfrance.org, create your dossier, pay the Campus France fee (€50 approximately), and attend a compulsory Campus France interview in Kathmandu. This pre-visa procedure must be completed before you can apply for a French student visa. Start the Campus France process 6–8 months before your target October entry.

Top Universities and Programs for Nepali Students

Sciences: Sorbonne University (Paris, top-ranked for sciences, humanities, and medicine), Université Paris-Saclay (engineering and natural sciences, QS top 15 globally for physical sciences), Université Grenoble Alpes (strong physics, chemistry, and IT), Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (sciences and health). For Nepali students with strong science +2 backgrounds, these universities offer world-class science education at low tuition.

IT and Computer Science: Université Paris Cité, Université de Bordeaux, Université de Toulouse (Toulouse has a major aerospace and IT sector), INSA Lyon (engineering applied sciences, accessible English tracks). France has a growing tech startup ecosystem in Paris (Station F, the world's largest startup campus) and Montpellier — CS graduates access this market with good French language skills.

Business and Economics: Paris-Dauphine (business and economics, competitive entry), Université de Bordeaux (economics, management), Université de Lyon (management and economics). For Grandes Écoles business at the master's level, HEC Paris, ESSEC, and EDHEC are world top-20 business schools — but primarily relevant at master's level after a Licence or foreign bachelor's.

IUT programs (2-year DUT / 3-year BUT): IUT campuses across France offer practical, career-focused programs in IT, logistics, business, biological technology, and civil engineering at lower selectivity. Tuition is the same (€2,770/year or €243 with exemption). IUT graduates can pursue a Licence Professionnelle (1 additional year) to complete a full bachelor's. Good pathway for Nepali students who want practical skills alongside French language development.

How to Apply via Campus France: Step by Step

Step 1 (8–12 months before October start): Register on the Campus France Nepal portal at nepal.campusfrance.org. Create your dossier, enter your academic background, upload +2 transcripts and certificates, and pay the Campus France fee. This is a pre-application platform — the actual university application comes after.

Step 2 (7–9 months before): Research French universities and programs. Use the Campus France search tool to find programs matching your academic background and language level. Most Licence programs at French public universities use the Parcoursup national platform for applications — register at parcoursup.fr and add your chosen programs. Parcoursup opens for formulation of wishes in January each year, closes in March.

Step 3 (6–8 months before): Attend your Campus France interview in Kathmandu. This is a required counselling interview where a Campus France advisor reviews your academic profile, chosen programs, and language level. The interview is not a selection process — it helps ensure your application is appropriate. After the interview, you receive a Campus France reference number needed for your visa application.

Step 4 (4–6 months before): Receive Parcoursup offers (June). Accept your preferred offer and complete enrollment at the university. Apply for the French Long Stay Student Visa (VLS-TS) at TLScontact in Kathmandu — fee €50, processing 3–6 weeks. Apply for MoEST NOC simultaneously.

Cost and Living in France

Tuition at public universities: €2,770/year standard (non-EU rate). With Bienvenue en France exemption (granted to students meeting specific academic excellence criteria), tuition drops to €243/year — the same as French domestic students. Check whether your university and program participates in the exemption program — many French public universities offer this reduction automatically to academically strong international applicants.

Living costs: Paris €1,000–1,500/month (NPR 13–21 lakh/year). Lyon, Toulouse, Marseille, Bordeaux: €700–1,000/month (NPR 10–14 lakh/year). Smaller university cities (Grenoble, Strasbourg, Montpellier): €600–850/month (NPR 8–12 lakh/year). CROUS student housing (Cités Universitaires) is the most affordable option at €200–400/month — apply as early as possible through trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr. Very high demand, especially in Paris.

Part-time work: students on French student visas can work 964 hours/year (equivalent to 20 hrs/week). Minimum wage (SMIC): €11.88/hour (from November 2024). Working 20 hrs/week earns approximately €950/month — covering most living costs in regional cities. Common student jobs: catering, retail, childcare (garde d'enfants), private tutoring, translation or interpretation, and campus assistant roles.

Total annual cost: Paris — tuition €2,770 + living €12,000 + insurance €300 + misc €500 = €15,570/year (NPR ~22 lakh). Regional cities — tuition €2,770 + living €8,400 + insurance €300 + misc €300 = €11,770/year (NPR ~16 lakh). With the €243 exemption: subtract €2,527 from tuition. With part-time work earnings: effective family contribution drops significantly.
