Netherlands Scholarships for Nepali Students 2026-27

The NL Scholarship, formerly known as the Holland Scholarship, is the flagship merit award funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, jointly administered with participating research universities and universities of applied sciences (HBO). For the 2026-27 academic year, the award is worth €5,000, paid as a one-time grant in the first year of study. In Nepali rupees at mid-2026 rates, that is approximately NPR 7.5–8 lakh.

Nepali students are fully eligible as non-EEA nationals. To qualify, you must be admitted to a full-time bachelor's or master's programme at a participating Dutch institution, hold no prior Dutch degree, and meet the university's own academic entry standards. Each participating institution sets its own internal deadline, typically between 1 December and 1 February for September intake, so check your target university's scholarship page early. The award cannot be combined at most institutions with other full-tuition scholarships, but it stacks with personal savings or part-time work income.

Because the €5,000 award does not cover full tuition (master's fees typically run €11,000–€20,000 per year for non-EEA students), treat it as a meaningful offset rather than a complete funding solution. Pair it with the Erasmus Mundus or a university-specific scholarship for full coverage.

Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM) programmes are the most generous scholarships available to Nepali students for studying in Europe, including the Netherlands. The European Commission funds approximately 3,000 awards each academic year. Nepal is explicitly listed among targeted regions, meaning a dedicated quota of seats exists for Nepali applicants, improving competitive odds against the global pool.

Each EMJM scholarship covers 100% of tuition fees (regardless of amount), a monthly living allowance of roughly €1,000, return flights, and health insurance for the full duration, usually 24 months across two or three European partner universities. Several programmes include Dutch institutions such as Wageningen University, Delft University of Technology, and the University of Amsterdam as consortium partners. Application windows typically open October–November and close in January for September intake, so plan at least 12 months ahead.

Competition is high but Nepali applicants with strong bachelor's GPAs (above 3.5/4.0 or equivalent first-class honours), published research or professional experience, and a clearly motivated statement have a realistic path. Shortlisted candidates are normally notified between March and May.

TU Delft's Justus and Louise van Effen Excellence Scholarship is one of the most competitive institutional awards in the Netherlands. It provides full tuition coverage plus a monthly living allowance for outstanding non-EEA MSc students admitted to a two-year regular TU Delft master's programme. A bachelor's degree from an internationally recognised university outside the Netherlands is required, along with a strong academic record. Application is made directly through TU Delft's admission portal alongside the programme application.

Wageningen University and Research (WUR) runs the Excellence Programme for high-achieving non-EEA master's applicants. Coverage typically includes partial or full tuition and a living allowance, with the exact amount set annually. WUR is particularly strong in agriculture, food science, environmental studies, and life sciences, fields relevant to Nepali students interested in food systems, forestry, or water management. For 2026-27, applications for September intake close around 1 February.

Maastricht University offers the UM High Potential Scholarship for non-EEA students across any UM master's programme, covering tuition, monthly living expenses, insurance, and visa costs. Additionally, the UM Social Justice Scholarship provides a full award of €34,000 to one highly talented student admitted to the Master's in Globalization and Law. Maastricht's problem-based learning model and central European location make it attractive for Nepali students aiming at law, health sciences, or international business.

Non-EEA students pay institutional tuition fees set independently by each Dutch university. For 2026-27, bachelor's programmes typically cost €7,000–€16,000 per year; master's programmes range from €11,000 to over €20,000 per year depending on the field and institution. STEM, engineering, and data science programmes at research universities tend to sit at the higher end, while business and social science programmes at HBO institutions are often more affordable at €8,000–€12,000 per year.

Compared with the UK (where master's fees for non-EEA students regularly exceed £20,000–£30,000 per year) and the USA (where out-of-state or private university costs can reach USD 40,000–60,000 per year), the Netherlands represents meaningful savings even before scholarships. Living costs are estimated at €800–€1,500 per month depending on city, Amsterdam is most expensive (€1,200–€1,500), while Groningen, Enschede, or Maastricht are more manageable at €800–€1,100 per month. The Dutch immigration authority IND requires proof of at least €1,130.77 per month for the study period.

A realistic annual budget for a Nepali student without scholarship is €23,000–€35,000 (tuition plus living), or roughly NPR 35–53 lakh at mid-2026 exchange rates. The NL Scholarship reduces this by approximately NPR 7.5 lakh in year one; a full Erasmus Mundus award eliminates nearly all costs for two years.

One of the Netherlands' strongest advantages for Nepali graduates is the Orientation Year permit (zoekjaar). After completing a Dutch degree, international graduates can apply for a one-year residence permit that gives unrestricted access to the Dutch labour market, no employer sponsorship or work permit (TWV) required, and no sector restrictions. The 2026 application fee is €254, and IND typically processes applications within 4–8 weeks. Graduates of top-200 global universities who studied outside the Netherlands may also apply within three years of graduation.

During the Orientation Year, you can work full-time in any field, freelance, or set up a business. If you secure employment, you can transition to the Highly Skilled Migrant permit (kennismigrant). Because you came through the zoekjaar route, the minimum gross monthly salary threshold is lower, approximately €3,122 in 2026, compared with candidates applying directly from abroad. The Netherlands has one of the highest English-speaking populations in continental Europe (over 90% of Dutch adults speak English), a large international corporate presence (ASML, Shell, Unilever, Philips, ING), and strong demand for engineers, data scientists, and logistics professionals.
