UK University Intakes and Application Deadlines for Nepali Students (2026–2027)
UK universities have two main intakes: September (the primary intake) and January (a substantial secondary intake). September has more programs and scholarship options. January intake helps students who need extra time. For September 2026, submit university applications by January–March 2026 (UCAS deadline January 31 for undergraduate). Account for IELTS UKVI booking time and CAS processing.
UK's Two Main Academic Intakes
UK universities operate primarily on a September academic year start. The traditional intake (September/October) is the main one for nearly all undergraduate programs and most postgraduate programs. Each year, hundreds of thousands of international students join UK universities in September. The academic year typically runs from late September through late June, with breaks at Christmas and Easter.
January is a substantial secondary intake at most UK universities, particularly for postgraduate programs. Roughly 60-70% of taught master's programs offer January start dates as well as September. January intake provides a legitimate alternative for students who needed extra time to complete their bachelor's, improve IELTS scores, or arrange finances. Course duration and content are identical to September entry.
A small number of universities offer May intake for select programs, typically business, IT, and pre-master's pathways. May intake is more common at private and pathway providers (like Kaplan, INTO, Navitas) than at traditional universities. For most Nepali students, the September and January intakes are the primary options to consider.
| Intake | Availability | Application deadline (postgraduate) |
|---|---|---|
| September 2026 (main) | Nearly all programmes | UCAS 31 Jan 2026 (UG); rolling to Jun–Jul 2026 (PG) |
| January 2027 (secondary) | 60–70% of taught master's | Jul–Oct 2026 |
| May (select) | Business, IT, pre-master's pathways | Varies by pathway provider |
September 2026 Intake, Timeline and Deadlines
For September 2026 (the main intake), university applications follow different deadlines depending on level. Undergraduate (bachelor's) applications go through UCAS, the centralized UK undergraduate application system. UCAS deadline for September 2026 entry is typically 31 January 2026 (earlier deadlines for medicine, dentistry, veterinary, and Oxford/Cambridge: 16 October 2025).
Postgraduate applications are made directly to each university, no centralized system. Postgraduate deadlines vary widely: Oxford and Cambridge typically close in December–January; competitive programs at Russell Group universities close in February–April; most other universities have rolling admissions with deadlines as late as May–July. As a practical rule, submit your strongest applications by January 2026 and use February–April for additional applications.
After receiving your offer (March–June 2026 for postgraduate, March–May 2026 for undergraduate), accept your preferred offer and pay the enrolment deposit (typically £1,000–£3,000). Receive your CAS within 4-6 weeks of meeting all conditions. Apply for your student visa (allow 3-4 weeks for processing). Total time from initial application to UK arrival: 6-9 months. Start your application process by July–September 2025 for the smoothest September 2026 entry.
January 2027 Intake, When It Makes Sense
For January 2027 entry, postgraduate application deadlines are typically July–October 2026. January intake is genuinely suitable for: students who need additional time to complete their bachelor's degree (NEB results in mid-2026 making September 2026 too tight), students needing to retake IELTS for higher scores, students arranging financial documents and loans (loan processing can take 4-8 weeks), and students wanting to start their job search and savings before going abroad.
January-admitted students at UK universities follow exactly the same curriculum as September-admitted students, the program content and duration is identical. However, you may find: career fairs and recruitment events tend to align with the September academic calendar; the cohort of January-admitted international students is smaller, though still substantial; and dissertation/project periods may differ slightly.
From a Graduate Route perspective, January intake works equally well. Your 2-year Graduate Route begins after you complete your degree, for a January 2027 start to a 1-year master's, you graduate in December 2027 and your Graduate Route runs December 2027 to December 2029. The 4-month difference vs September entry does not affect your post-study work eligibility or duration.
Action Plan from May 2026: September 2026 (Urgent) and January 2027
May–June 2026 (September 2026, urgent): Postgraduate applications for September 2026 are still open at most UK universities. Many Russell Group and mid-tier universities accept postgraduate applications through June–July 2026 for September 2026 entry. Apply now if you have your IELTS score and academic documents ready. UCAS undergraduate deadline for September 2026 was January 31, 2026 (Oxbridge/medicine: October 15, 2025), if you missed these, target September 2027 instead. For September 2026 postgrad: complete your application, accept your offer, and get your CAS as quickly as possible, you need at least 6 weeks for visa processing.
June–July 2026: Get your CAS from your university (4–6 weeks after meeting all offer conditions). Take your TB test at the IOM-approved clinic in Kathmandu (mandatory for Nepal applicants). Apply for the NOC from MoEST Nepal (2–4 weeks processing). Assemble your student visa application: CAS, passport, financial documents showing tuition + £13,761 (London) or £10,539 (outside London) in funds, TB test result, IHS payment receipt (£776/year × visa duration). Pay the visa application fee of £558.
July–August 2026 (September 2026 visa): Submit your student visa application at VFS Global Kathmandu. Standard processing is 3 weeks. Apply by late July 2026 at the latest for a September 2026 start. Book flights for arrival 1–2 weeks before your university orientation (typically early September).
September–November 2026 (January 2027 target): Research and shortlist universities. Build a list of 8–12 UK universities with January 2027 postgraduate intake, not all programs offer January entry (check each program's intake page). Begin applications and IELTS preparation. Chevening Scholarship applications for the following year (2027–28 academic year) typically open in August and close in November, submit your Chevening application during this period if you qualify.
December 2026–March 2027 (January 2027 entry): Receive admission decisions, accept offers, obtain CAS, complete visa application (same process as above). UK January 2027 visa applications can be submitted from October–November 2026, submit at least 3 weeks before your start date. Arrange UK accommodation, book flights, and prepare for departure.
After Submitting: Offers, Conditions, and CAS
UK university offers come in two types: conditional offers (you have met some criteria but need to meet additional conditions, such as final transcripts, IELTS score, or English language pre-sessional course) and unconditional offers (you have met all criteria and are guaranteed admission). Read your offer letter carefully, conditions must be met by specific deadlines.
Once you receive an offer, pay the enrolment deposit to formally accept and trigger the CAS process. Deposit amounts: typically £1,000–£3,000 for postgraduate, £1,000–£2,000 for undergraduate. The deposit is credited toward your first year's tuition; it is non-refundable in most cases unless you are refused a visa (refund policies vary by university, check before paying).
Your CAS is issued by the university through the Home Office system after you have met all admission and deposit conditions. The CAS is sent by email and contains your CAS reference number, needed for your visa application. The CAS is valid for 6 months, you must apply for your visa within this window. If your CAS expires before you apply for the visa, the university may need to issue a new one (sometimes with additional fees).

Frequently asked questions
What is the UCAS deadline for UK undergraduate applications?
For September 2026 entry, the standard UCAS deadline is 31 January 2026, by which point you should have submitted your full application including your personal statement and academic reference. Earlier deadlines apply for Oxford and Cambridge (16 October 2025) and for medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine (also 16 October 2025). Most other universities accept UCAS applications until the late deadline of 30 June 2026, but applications submitted after 31 January are considered only if the course still has places. UCAS Clearing then runs from July to October for any remaining vacancies. Nepali students should aim to apply by the January deadline to keep the widest choice of courses.
Is January a good intake for postgraduate study in the UK?
Yes, January intake is widely available for taught master's programmes at most UK universities, with roughly 60 to 70 percent of programmes offering a January start. Many Russell Group and mid-tier universities offer it. The course content, duration, and post-study Graduate Route eligibility are identical to September entry. January is particularly suitable for Nepali students who need extra time after completing their bachelor's, retaking IELTS for a higher score, or arranging an education loan, which can take four to eight weeks to process. The main trade-off is that recruitment fairs tend to follow the September calendar and the January international cohort is somewhat smaller, though still substantial.
How early should I apply to a UK university for September 2026?
Apply 6 to 12 months before your intended start date. For September 2026 postgraduate entry, the earliest you can usually apply is October 2025, and most universities run multiple application rounds with rolling decisions. Submit your strongest applications by January 2026 to leave enough time for offer decisions, paying your deposit, CAS processing (four to six weeks after meeting conditions), and visa application (about three weeks from Nepal). Last-minute applications after May 2026 often miss scholarship deadlines, since Chevening closes in early November and most university awards are decided by February. Starting early also gives you time for the mandatory TB test and NOC from MoEST.
Do all UK universities require IELTS UKVI?
For visa purposes, you specifically need a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), and the most common is IELTS for UKVI Academic. Some universities accept their own internal English assessments or alternatives such as PTE Academic UKVI. When booking IELTS, choose the UKVI version specifically, because the standard IELTS is not accepted for UK visa purposes even though the test content is the same. The UKVI version costs slightly more (roughly £10 to £15 difference) but is the only valid version for your visa. Always check both your university's English requirement and the visa requirement, the higher of the two applies, and book your test early as UKVI test centres in Nepal have limited slots.
What is ATAS and do I need it?
ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) is a security clearance certificate required for some sensitive postgraduate STEM programmes, typically advanced engineering, materials science, computing, mathematics, and physics at master's and PhD level. Your university will state in your offer letter whether ATAS is required for your specific course, so you do not have to guess. Application is free and made online at gov.uk/guidance/academic-technology-approval-scheme. Processing usually takes four to six weeks, and longer if a security review is needed, so apply as soon as you have your offer and well before your visa application. You cannot apply for your student visa without a valid ATAS certificate if your course requires one.
