About DTU – Wind & Energy Systems
DTU's Department of Wind and Energy Systems is the world's largest public research institute for wind energy, based at DTU Lyngby and Risø campuses in Denmark.
DTU – Wind and Energy Systems is the department within the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) dedicated to wind power and energy research. Formed in 2022 through the merger of the former Department of Wind Energy and the Centre for Electric Power and Energy, it employs over 450 staff from 48 nationalities and is widely described as the world's largest public research institute for wind and energy.
The department spans 4 divisions and 22 research sections covering atmospheric science, turbine aerodynamics, structural mechanics, offshore wind, grid integration, and digital energy systems. Its flagship graduate offering is the two-year MSc in Wind Energy (120 ECTS), with six specialisation tracks including Offshore Wind Energy, Electrical Wind Turbine Systems, and Digitalization in Wind Energy. A joint offshore wind track with KAIST in South Korea is also available.
The department operates across two Danish campuses: DTU Lyngby (near Copenhagen) and DTU Risø in Roskilde. DTU as a whole ranks 107th in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 121st in the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings, and holds the number-one position in Europe for engineering among EngiRank's institution list. DTU graduates are heavily recruited by industry leaders such as Vestas and Siemens Gamesa.

For Nepali students
- Denmark's post-study establishment card allows non-EU graduates of accredited DTU programs to stay and job-seek for up to two years after graduation, directly relevant to Nepali students targeting careers in the rapidly growing global wind energy sector.
- DTU awards a limited number of tuition fee waivers to high-achieving non-EU MSc students on academic merit, which can cover the full two-year fee of approximately €30,000 (roughly USD 16,500 per year at €7,500 per semester); without a waiver, costs are significant but comparable to other top European technical universities.
- The MSc in Wind Energy is one of the most specialised and industry-connected programs of its kind globally, with graduates regularly placed at Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, and Ørsted, companies that operate internationally and offer Nepali graduates pathways to global engineering careers.
- DTU's international outlook is strong, 36% of its 11,221 students are international and 62% of faculty are from outside Denmark, making it an accessible environment for Nepali students despite no specific Nepali community data being publicly available.
