About Lincoln University

Lincoln University is New Zealand's specialist land-based university, ranked #82 globally for Agriculture and Forestry (QS 2026), located 15 km from Christchurch.

Lincoln University is a small, specialist public university located in the township of Lincoln, approximately 15 kilometres south of Christchurch in Canterbury, New Zealand. Established in 1878 as an agricultural college and granted university status in 1990, it is the oldest agricultural teaching institution in the Southern Hemisphere and one of New Zealand's eight public universities.

The university organises its teaching across three faculties: Agribusiness and Commerce; Agriculture and Life Sciences; and Environment, Society and Design. Its strongest programs are in agriculture, environmental science, landscape architecture, viticulture, and agribusiness. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, Lincoln ranked 82nd globally for Agriculture and Forestry, the sharpest specialist ranking achieved by any New Zealand university in that field.

With roughly 4,500 students, Lincoln is the smallest of New Zealand's public universities, which keeps class sizes small and gives students direct access to research facilities including farms, vineyards, and environmental field stations on its 50-hectare campus. It holds an overall QS World Ranking of #407 (2026) and a Times Higher Education ranking of 501–600 (2026).

For Nepali students

  • Agriculture and environmental science are priority fields in Nepal's development agenda, and Lincoln's top-100 global subject ranking (#82, QS 2026) in Agriculture and Forestry makes it one of the most targeted options for Nepali students who want an internationally credible qualification in land-based sciences, agribusiness, or environmental management.
  • Lincoln offers the International School Leavers Scholarship (NZD 10,000) and the International Undergraduate Scholarship (NZD 3,000), both open to international students including those from Nepal, which can partially offset the annual undergraduate tuition starting from approximately NZD 29,700.
  • Graduates who complete a bachelor's degree in New Zealand are eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa of up to three years with open work rights, allowing Nepali graduates to gain international work experience or pursue residency pathways without needing an employer-sponsored visa immediately after graduation.
  • The small campus environment (~4,500 students, roughly 44% international) means individual attention from faculty is more accessible than at larger New Zealand universities, and the university is within commuting distance of Christchurch, New Zealand's third-largest city, for part-time work and community life.
