Studying Nursing Abroad vs Working Abroad — Know the Difference

Before comparing countries for a nursing degree, clarify which pathway you need: (1) If you have NOT yet completed a nursing degree — you need to study nursing abroad (BSc or MSc). (2) If you have a PCL Nursing or BN from Nepal and a Nepal Nursing Council licence — you can skip the degree and go straight to NCLEX (USA), ANMAC+AHPRA (Australia), or NMC (UK) for professional registration. Studying abroad for a new nursing degree is expensive (NPR 1–2+ crore) and takes 3–4 years. Going directly with your Nepal nursing degree via licensing exam is faster and cheaper. Choose the study pathway only if your Nepal qualification is not accepted by the destination country's registration body, or if you want a higher degree for career advancement.

USA — BSc Nursing Degree + EB-3 Green Card Pathway

A BSc Nursing (BSN) in the USA takes 4 years. After graduating, you pass NCLEX-RN (US-educated nurses pass at 85%+ on the first attempt), get your state RN licence, and work on OPT (12–36 months) while a hospital sponsors your EB-3 visa. Average US RN salary: USD 93,600/year. Tuition: USD 25,000–45,000/year at state universities.

Best-value BSN programmes for international students: University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing (large programme, competitive tuition), Indiana University School of Nursing, Arizona State University (online BSN option), Florida International University. Admission: NEB +2 Science (Biology stream), IELTS 6.0–7.0, strong grades. F-1 visa financial requirement: show USD 50,000–70,000 available.

Australia — BSc Nursing + Fast PR Pathway

Australian BSc Nursing is 3 years — one year shorter than USA. After graduating and achieving IELTS 7.0 (or OET Grade B), you register with AHPRA and work on a 485 post-study visa. With Australian work experience, you apply for 189/190 skilled migration (permanent residency). Australia has a projected 120,000+ nurse shortage by 2030 — meaning invitation thresholds for nurses are relatively accessible.

Tuition: AUD 28,000–45,000/year. Best-value universities: Charles Sturt University, CQUniversity, Flinders University (Adelaide — strong Nepali nurse community), La Trobe University. A strong IELTS score (7.5+) boosts your 189 points total — prioritise this for a better PR outcome.

Germany — Paid Pflegeausbildung (No Tuition Debt)

Germany's Pflegeausbildung is a 3-year paid nursing training — you earn EUR 1,100–1,300/month during training with zero tuition fees. This is fundamentally different from a university degree abroad. The barrier is German B2 language. Start German lessons immediately — Goethe-Institut Nepal offers A1 through B2 courses in Kathmandu.

After completing Pflegeausbildung, you are a qualified Pflegefachkraft earning EUR 3,510–4,489/month. No debt, EU-wide recognised qualification, permanent residency after 5 years. This pathway works well for motivated students who can commit to 12–18 months of German language study before starting training.

UK — Graduate Route Visa + NHS Employment

UK BSc Nursing (3 years) gives you a Graduate Route visa (2 years, no restrictions) immediately after graduation. After NMC registration (CBT plus OSCE), you can work for any NHS Trust. NHS Band 5 starting salary: GBP 29,970. Tuition: GBP 14,000–20,000/year. Health and Care Worker Visa is affordable (GBP 247/year) after Graduate Route.

Best-value UK nursing universities: University of Hertfordshire (large Nepali community, GBP 14,000/year), Coventry University (competitive tuition, strong NHS placements), University of Portsmouth, Sheffield Hallam University. UK also allows 20 hours of work per week as a nursing student — HCA roles in NHS hospitals pay GBP 12–14/hour and directly support your future NMC portfolio.
