About FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg
FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg is a 1743-founded German research university spanning two cities, renowned for medical engineering and industry-linked innovation.
Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), founded in 1743, is one of Germany's largest universities with approximately 40,000 students across five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences and Theology; Business, Economics and Law; Medicine; Sciences; and Engineering. It operates across campuses in Erlangen, Nuremberg, and Fürth, and secures around 300 million euros annually in third-party research funding.
FAU is particularly strong in engineering, medical engineering, materials science, and life sciences. Its Medical Engineering program, offered at both Bachelor's and Master's level, is embedded within the Medical Valley, a leading-edge cluster around the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region that connects FAU with over 700 medical technology companies. The university is also a significant node for immunology, infection research, and quantum technologies, and has been recognised as the most innovative university in Germany by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
FAU's QS World University Ranking places it at #232 globally (2026 edition), and the Times Higher Education ranks it in the 201–250 band worldwide. The university offers around 260 degree programmes, including approximately 50 developed specifically for international students, and imposes no tuition fees, students pay only a semester contribution of roughly 82 euros.

For Nepali students
- FAU charges no tuition fees for international undergraduate and postgraduate students, only a semester contribution of approximately 82 euros, making it one of the most cost-accessible research-intensive universities available to Nepali applicants, with estimated monthly living costs of around 700–900 euros in Erlangen.
- Its engineering, computer science, and medical engineering programmes are directly relevant to the fields most Nepali students pursue abroad, and FAU's deep ties to the Medical Valley and industry partners improve graduate employability within Germany's highly demanded technical sector.
- Germany's post-study work rights allow international graduates to remain for up to 18 months on a job-seeker visa after completing their degree, with a clear pathway to an EU Blue Card for qualified professionals, a strong draw for Nepali graduates aiming at long-term career prospects in Europe.
- International students can apply for DAAD-funded graduation scholarships administered through FAU's Department for International Affairs, as well as the national DAAD scholarship database, which lists programmes open to South Asian applicants; FAU itself notes that roughly 20% of its student body is international.
