About Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da)
Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da) is Germany's largest university of applied sciences in Hesse, offering 70+ practice-oriented programs with no tuition fees.
Hochschule Darmstadt (h_da), founded in 1971 with institutional roots tracing to 1876, is a public university of applied sciences and the largest of its kind in the state of Hesse. With approximately 17,000 students across 13 departments, it offers more than 70 bachelor's and master's programs spanning engineering, computer science, design, economics, social sciences, and architecture.
The university's academic strengths lie in applied engineering and technology fields: electrical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, computer science, and plastics engineering are among its core disciplines. h_da is a partner in ATHENE, Germany's national research center for applied cybersecurity, and participates in IT security research through Darmstadt's broader science ecosystem alongside Fraunhofer and GSI institutes.
The main campus is located in Darmstadt, Hesse, roughly 30 km south of Frankfurt, with a media-focused satellite campus in Dieburg. Darmstadt is part of the Rhine-Main-Neckar technology corridor, sometimes called the 'Silicon Valley of Germany', giving students direct access to a dense cluster of IT, pharmaceutical, and engineering employers. h_da is a founding member of the EUt+ (European University of Technology) alliance and the HAWtech network of leading German universities of applied sciences.
For Nepali students
- Germany charges no tuition fees at public universities, including h_da; students pay only a semester contribution of approximately €300, making it one of the most cost-accessible study destinations for Nepali students compared to the UK, Australia, or Canada.
- h_da's engineering, computer science, and mechatronics programs are practice-oriented with mandatory industrial placements (Praxissemester), giving Nepali graduates work experience with German employers before graduation, a direct pathway into Germany's 18-month Job Seeker Visa and subsequent work permit system.
- Nepali students holding a bachelor's degree are eligible to apply for DAAD scholarships, administered through DAAD's New Delhi regional office which covers Nepal, to fund master's programs at h_da in fields such as engineering or IT, with monthly stipends of around €934.
- Darmstadt's location within the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metro area means access to a large South Asian diaspora community, international student services, and straightforward connections via Frankfurt Airport, the main international hub for flights to and from Kathmandu.
