About University of Limerick (UL)
University of Limerick (UL) is Ireland's youngest research university, founded in 1972, and currently ranked QS #601-650 globally (2025). UL is unique in the Irish university landscape for its mandatory Cooperative Education programme — almost all undergraduate and many postgraduate students undertake a structured 6-8 month paid work placement in industry, making UL graduates among the most employment-ready in Ireland. The riverside campus on the Shannon is one of Ireland's most architecturally striking — a self-contained campus city with its own sports arena, concert venue, and medical centre.
UL has particular strengths in science, engineering, business (Kemmy Business School), education, arts, and healthcare. The university's sports science and physical education programs are among Ireland's best, and its nursing and midwifery programs feed into the mid-west regional hospital network (University Hospital Limerick). The Co-op placement model means UL students regularly work at companies including Abbott, Johnson & Johnson, Regeneron, and Dell across Ireland's midwest.
