About Osaka University
Osaka University is a leading Japanese national research university ranked #91 globally (QS 2026), known for engineering, medicine, and immunology research.
Osaka University (officially The University of Osaka) is a national research university established in 1931, located across three campuses in Suita, Toyonaka, and Minoh in the Osaka metropolitan area. It comprises 11 undergraduate schools and is one of Japan's seven former imperial universities, placing it among the country's most prestigious public institutions.
The university has particular strengths in engineering, medicine, immunology, laser science, and robotics. Its Institute for Laser Engineering is one of the world's leading high-power laser research centres, and its dentistry and oral sciences programme ranks #13 globally in the Shanghai subject rankings. English-taught degree tracks are available through the International College and Graduate School of Engineering Science.
With approximately 22,400 students and around 10–12% international enrolment, Osaka University has an active international campus community. The Suita campus houses medicine and engineering faculties close to Osaka's biomedical research corridor, while Toyonaka hosts science and humanities. The city of Osaka is Japan's third-largest urban economy, offering both industry connections and a relatively lower cost of living compared to Tokyo.

For Nepali students
Growing Nepali student community in Osaka-Kansai region; strong connections to Japan's manufacturing and electronics industry.
- The Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship, administered by the Embassy of Japan in Nepal every May–July, covers full tuition, a monthly stipend of approximately ¥143,000–145,000, and a return airfare, and Osaka University is one of the designated national universities where MEXT scholars are placed, making it a realistic fully-funded option for high-achieving Nepali students.
- Undergraduate tuition at Osaka University is ¥535,800 per year (approximately USD 3,700) regardless of nationality, which is substantially lower than tuition at comparable universities in the UK, Australia, or the US, reducing the financial burden for self-funded students.
- STEM graduates from Osaka University are eligible for Japan's Engineer/Specialist in Humanities visa, and a Designated Activities visa allows a one-year job-search extension after graduation; high-scoring graduates can pursue Japan's Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) visa, which accelerates permanent residency to as little as one year.
- Osaka University's strengths in engineering, biomedical sciences, and materials science align well with the graduate-level fields most commonly pursued by Nepali students in Japan, and the university's international student office provides dedicated support services for non-Japanese speakers transitioning to campus life.
