About Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT)
EIT is a public polytechnic in Napier, New Zealand, offering 160+ programs with specialisations in viticulture, nursing, and computing across three campuses.
Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) is a New Zealand government-owned polytechnic established in 1975 as Hawke's Bay Community College and renamed EIT in 1996. It operates three campuses, its main 28-hectare campus in Taradale (Napier, Hawke's Bay), a city campus in Auckland, and a campus in Gisborne (Tairāwhiti). In January 2026 EIT regained independent status after the government wound up the Te Pūkenga network merger.
EIT offers more than 160 programmes spanning certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees in fields including nursing, computing, business, social work, trades, agriculture, and hospitality. Its viticulture and wine science programmes are a particular strength, drawing directly on Hawke's Bay's position as one of New Zealand's premier wine regions. Nursing students have access to clinical simulation laboratories described by the institution as among the best-equipped in the country.
EIT enrolls roughly 10,000 students in total, with approximately 400 international students each year arriving from more than 40 countries. The Hawke's Bay campus is a regional institution, smaller and more community-oriented than New Zealand's research universities, and it does not appear in QS or Times Higher Education global rankings. It is a Category 1 provider under the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission, indicating it meets government quality standards.
For Nepali students
- Hawke's Bay is a significantly more affordable region than Auckland or Wellington: living costs are lower and the institution's smaller size means more direct access to lecturers, which can ease the transition for students new to the New Zealand tertiary system.
- EIT's viticulture, horticulture, and nursing programmes lead directly into sectors with genuine New Zealand labour shortages, improving post-study employment prospects, critical for Nepali graduates who need to demonstrate job ties to qualify for Accredited Employer Work Visas after their Post-Study Work Visa.
- Graduates of a Level 7 (bachelor's) or higher EIT qualification are eligible for a three-year Post-Study Work Visa with open work rights and no employer-sponsorship requirement, giving Nepali graduates time to build New Zealand work experience and potentially transition to residency pathways.
- EIT lists several domain-specific scholarships (nursing, viticulture, computing) open to students through its partnership with Generosity New Zealand's givME database; Nepali applicants interested in these fields should contact [email protected] directly to confirm current eligibility, as scholarship details are not published on the public-facing pages.
