About Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT)
MIT is a Category One NZQA-rated institute of technology in South Auckland, specialising in vocational, technical, and professional education since 1970.
Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) is a publicly funded institute of technology established in 1970 and based in South Auckland, New Zealand. It holds a Category One rating from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), the highest possible rating, indicating strong quality assurance. As of January 2026, MIT merged with Unitec Institute of Technology to form the largest independent training provider in New Zealand, collectively serving around 20,000 students across Auckland.
MIT's academic focus is practical and career-oriented, with particular strengths in nursing, engineering, trades, data analytics, business, and computing. The institution operates a dedicated TechPark campus equipped with industry-standard workshops and laboratories for engineering and trades training. It also hosts the New Zealand Maritime School at its Auckland CBD campus. Qualifications are offered from certificate level through to bachelor and postgraduate degrees across more than 70 programmes.
MIT operates five campuses across the Auckland region, including its main campus in Ōtara, a Manukau campus, TechPark in Manukau, a city campus in the Auckland CBD, and a Papatoetoe site. Its South Auckland location places it in one of New Zealand's most culturally diverse urban areas, with strong Pacific and South Asian student communities. The institution has a longstanding partnership with Waikato-Tainui under a formal Kawenata agreement.
For Nepali students
- MIT's nursing and engineering programmes are in fields where New Zealand has sustained labour shortages, making graduates competitive for the post-study open work visa, currently available for up to three years for degree-level graduates, and potential residency pathways under the Skilled Migrant Category.
- International undergraduate tuition at MIT ranges from approximately NZD 18,400 to NZD 31,200 per year, placing it at the lower to mid cost tier among New Zealand tertiary providers, which reduces the financial burden compared with major universities in Australia or the UK.
- Nepali students are eligible to apply for the government-funded Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships, which cover full tuition, a living allowance, health insurance, and return airfare; institutes of technology including MIT are among the eligible institutions for this award.
- South Auckland has a sizeable South Asian and Nepali diaspora community, and MIT's multicultural student body of around 1,900 international students means Nepali students are unlikely to find themselves socially isolated during their studies.
