Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a public tertiary education institution based in Nelson, New Zealand, with additional campuses in Richmond and Marlborough. Founded in 1905, it has operated for nearly 120 years and holds a Category 1 rating from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), the highest possible accreditation level. As of 1 January 2026, NMIT resumed independent governance after a period within the national Te Pūkenga polytechnic network.

The institution is particularly known for its vocational and applied programmes in viticulture and winemaking, aquaculture, maritime studies, aviation engineering, nursing, adventure tourism, and creative industries. The Marlborough region produces over 75% of New Zealand's wine, making NMIT's wine and viticulture programmes uniquely positioned.

NMIT's three main campuses are located at the top of New Zealand's South Island, a region with the highest sunshine hours in the country. The institution enrolls over 7,000 learners annually, including more than 400 international students from approximately 35 countries. NMIT reports that 91% of its graduates are employed after completing their studies.

For Nepali students

  • NMIT offers vocational bachelor's and diploma programmes in nursing, computing, engineering, and business, fields in high demand for Nepali students seeking practical qualifications that lead directly to employment in New Zealand.
  • As an NZQA Category 1 institution, NMIT's qualifications are fully recognised in New Zealand, and international graduates are eligible to apply for a Post-Study Work Visa, allowing them to gain work experience in New Zealand after graduating under standard Immigration New Zealand rules.
  • Tuition fees at NMIT are generally lower than those at New Zealand's major research universities, international undergraduate programmes are estimated at approximately NZD 16,500–20,000 per year, making it a more affordable pathway for Nepali students on tighter budgets.
  • NMIT's small class sizes and practical, industry-linked teaching model suit students who prefer hands-on learning over large lecture-based programmes, and the Nelson region offers a relatively low cost of living compared to Auckland or Wellington.
