About Unitec Institute of Technology

Unitec Institute of Technology is Auckland's largest institute of technology, offering employment-focused degrees and diplomas across two campuses.

Unitec Institute of Technology (Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka) is a publicly funded institute of technology based in Auckland, New Zealand, founded in 1976 as Carrington Technical Institute. It operates two campuses, the main 55-hectare Mt Albert campus and a Waitākere campus in Henderson, and serves approximately 16,844 students across qualifications from certificates to postgraduate degrees.

Unitec's academic strengths are firmly vocational: it offers bachelor's degrees and postgraduate programs in construction management, engineering technology, computing systems, architecture, business, nursing, and performing and screen arts. The institution has a formal partnership with IBM and offers an Introduction to Policing course developed with New Zealand Police, reflecting its emphasis on industry-connected training.

From 1 January 2026, Unitec became independent from the Te Pūkenga/NZIST network following a government restructure of the polytechnic sector. It is not ranked in global rankings such as QS World University Rankings, as its focus is on applied and vocational education rather than research output. It holds NZQA Category 1 (highest) provider status.

For Nepali students

  • Unitec's bachelor's degrees in construction management, engineering technology, and computing systems align with fields where Nepali graduates have strong employment prospects in New Zealand's labour market. International undergraduate tuition is approximately NZD 26,415–29,615 per year (around USD 15,800–17,700), making it notably more affordable than research universities in Auckland.
  • Graduates of Unitec's bachelor's degrees qualify for New Zealand's Post-Study Work Visa, which grants open work rights for up to three years, matching the duration of full-time study, this is a significant pathway to skilled residence in New Zealand.
  • Unitec offers an International Learner Study Grant that is automatically applied against tuition fees for eligible new international students, reducing upfront costs without a separate application. The New Zealand government's Manaaki scholarships, open to citizens of developing countries including Nepal, are also accessible to Unitec students.
  • Unitec's large and diverse student body of nearly 17,000, combined with Auckland's established Nepali community, means Nepali students are unlikely to feel isolated; Auckland has one of New Zealand's most active Nepali diaspora groups.
