About University of Canterbury

University of Canterbury is a comprehensive research university in Christchurch, New Zealand, ranked #261 globally by QS (2026) with strengths in engineering, linguistics, and sustainability.

The University of Canterbury (UC), formally Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, is a public research university established in 1873 and located in Christchurch (Ōtautahi), the South Island's largest city. It enrolls approximately 15,700 students from over 100 countries and holds QS 5-Star status, a designation maintained since 2011.

UC has notable academic strengths in engineering (civil and structural ranked top 100 globally by QS 2026), linguistics (ranked 61st globally), geography, and environmental studies (top 30 worldwide for environmental education). The university launched a new health science degree in 2025 and is consistently ranked second in New Zealand for graduate employability outcomes.

The main campus sits on a single site in suburban Christchurch, a city that underwent significant reconstruction after the 2010–2011 earthquakes and now has a modern inner city. Christchurch offers lower living costs than Auckland or Wellington, direct international flight connections, and access to the South Island's outdoors.

For Nepali students

  • New Zealand's Post-Study Work Visa allows most international graduates to work for up to three years after completing a qualification of at least two years, giving Nepali graduates a viable pathway to gain work experience and potentially transition to residency under the Skilled Migrant Category.
  • UC's engineering, computer science, and data science programs, all subject areas with strong QS subject rankings, align well with the academic backgrounds and career goals of many Nepali students seeking technical degrees abroad.
  • Annual international undergraduate tuition starts from approximately NZD 33,000–47,000 (roughly USD 20,000–28,000 depending on program), which is lower than equivalent programs in the UK or Australia, and Christchurch's cost of living is among the most affordable of any New Zealand university city.
  • UC offers equity-based scholarships open to students from developing countries, and the New Zealand Government's Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships (fully-funded) are available to Nepali applicants at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, making UC a viable option even for budget-constrained students.
