About Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec)
WelTec is a Wellington-based vocational polytechnic founded in 1904, offering certificates to bachelor's degrees in IT, engineering, nursing, and trades.
Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) is a government-owned vocational polytechnic based in Wellington, New Zealand, with roots dating to 1904. It currently operates as a business division of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), alongside Whitireia Community Polytechnic, with plans for the combined entity to become a standalone polytechnic from 1 January 2027. Around 8,000 students study annually across its campuses.
WelTec's academic strength lies in applied, industry-aligned programmes at NZQF Levels 4–7, spanning information technology, engineering and construction trades, business, health and nursing, hospitality, and creative arts. The Bachelor of Information Technology – accredited by IT Professionals New Zealand – is among the most popular qualifications for international students and includes an industry project in the final year. All programmes are developed in close partnership with employers, prioritising practical skills alongside theory.
The main WelTec campus, Te Awakairangi Campus, is located in Petone, Lower Hutt, roughly 15 km north-east of Wellington's CBD. Additional facilities operate in Wellington's city centre and Porirua. The institution is not a research university and does not hold a global QS or Times Higher Education ranking; it is recognised nationally as a vocational training provider by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
For Nepali students
- WelTec offers practical, shorter-duration programmes that lead directly to employment in New Zealand's IT, engineering, and health sectors, fields where Nepali graduates consistently find work in Wellington. International bachelor's degree graduates qualify for New Zealand's Post Study Work Visa of up to three years, providing a realistic pathway toward residency under the Skilled Migrant Category.
- Annual international tuition for a bachelor's programme runs approximately NZD $27,000 (around USD $16,500 at 2025 rates), which is meaningfully lower than most New Zealand universities and makes WelTec one of the more cost-accessible degree-granting institutions in the country for Nepali students on a budget.
- Entry requirements are achievable for Nepali applicants: a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.0 (no band below 5.5) is accepted, and the institution offers pastoral care and orientation support through a dedicated international student team. Students may also work up to 20 hours per week during term under their student visa, helping offset living costs in Wellington.
