GKS Scholarship from Nepal: The Fully Funded Korea Route in 2026

Around 2,000 graduate scholars from 149 countries won GKS in the 2026 cycle, which puts it in the same league as Japan's MEXT, Korea's own university scholarships, and the big Western programmes like Chevening and Fulbright. The difference is depth of coverage: GKS funds the degree and a paid language year, so you land in Korea with a stipend before your programme even starts.

NIIED restructured the money in the 2026 cycle: the old menu of separate allowances (settlement, insurance, TOPIK fees, completion grant) is now folded into one larger all-inclusive monthly allowance. Older blog posts still quote KRW 1,000,000 a month for a master's; that is the pre-2026 figure. The current amounts, from the official 2026 guidelines, are below.

KRW 1,380,000 is roughly NPR 135,000 a month at mid-2026 rates, in a country where a university dormitory and cafeteria absorb most living costs. The guidelines do note that amounts are subject to budget availability, so treat the figures as the 2026 cycle's numbers, not a lifetime promise.

Three requirements decide eligibility before anything else is read: citizenship, age, and grades. You and both parents must hold non-Korean citizenship. For the 2026 graduate cycle the age limit was under 40 (born after 1 September 1986); for the undergraduate cycle it was under 25 (born after 1 March 2001). Each new cycle shifts these dates forward by a year.

Ten graduate seats carried Nepal's name in the 2026 cycle: 4 through the embassy track in Kathmandu and 6 through the university track (4 general plus 2 regional R-GKS). The undergraduate cycle gave Nepal 2 embassy-track seats. The embassy quota has been stable, with 4 graduate seats in both the 2025 and 2026 cycles.

Small numbers cut both ways. Competition inside Nepal is real, but you are competing against Nepali applicants only for those designated seats, not the global pool, and the R-GKS regional track adds seats that many applicants ignore because the universities are outside Seoul. On top of the country quota, some programme streams are open to all nationalities without country limits, so the designated seats are a floor, not a ceiling.

The embassy track starts at the Korean Embassy in Kathmandu and lets you apply to 3 universities at once, with one condition: at least 1 of the 3 must be a Type B regional university. Pass the embassy round and NIIED's review, and all 3 of your universities assess you in parallel, so one application can end in multiple offers.

The university track starts with a single Korean university and is judged by that university alone, which suits applicants with one clear target, a strong research fit, or a professor contact. Type A lists carry the famous names (Seoul National University, KAIST, Yonsei, Korea University, POSTECH), while Type B covers the national universities in cities like Busan, Daegu, and Gwangju. One trap worth knowing: KAIST appears on the graduate list but not the undergraduate embassy list, so bachelor's applicants cannot pick it.

Two separate calendars run each year, and applying from Nepal means watching the embassy's notice board as much as NIIED's. The 2026 cycles ran on the dates below; the next windows follow the same pattern and NIIED had not published the 2027 guidelines as of July 2026, so the final row is an expectation, not a promise.

No Korean is required to apply, and most GKS scholars arrive with none: the first funded year in Korea is full-time language study. The obligation comes at the end of that year, when you must reach TOPIK level 3 to move into your degree programme.

Korean still pays off at selection. A TOPIK level 3 or higher certificate adds a 10% bonus to your allocated score in both cycles, and science or engineering choices add another 5% in the graduate cycle. At the top end, TOPIK 5 or 6 skips the language year entirely and starts the degree immediately. English scores follow a similar ladder in the language-proficiency section, with IELTS 8.0 or TOEFL iBT 114 scoring near the top, so strong English is worth documenting even though it is optional.

One recommendation letter, not two, is the 2026 graduate requirement, alongside the application form, a personal statement, a study plan, a self-declared medical assessment form, and your academic records. Citizenship proof for you and both parents, with a document showing the family relationship, completes the file. Selected scholars then need several extra consular-confirmed copies of their degree certificate before flying, for the admission letter, visa, and immigration.
