About Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences

Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS/HvA) is one of the Netherlands' largest applied sciences universities, with over 46,000 students across 7 faculties in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), known in Dutch as Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA), is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands, with roughly 46,000 students enrolled across more than 90 bachelor's and master's programmes. Founded in its current form in 1993, the university operates under the motto 'Creating Tomorrow' and focuses on practice-based, career-oriented education across seven faculties covering business, design, health, computing, media, sports, technology, and engineering.

AUAS is known for several internationally recognised specialist schools: the Amsterdam School of International Business (AMSIB), the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI), and the European School of Physiotherapy (ESP). English-taught bachelor programmes include International Business, Trade Management Asia, and Fashion & Branding, making AUAS a practical destination for non-Dutch-speaking international students. All students complete a mandatory practical work placement as part of their degree.

The university operates across multiple campuses in Amsterdam, including Amstel Campus, Business Campus, and Health Campus. Students come from over 85 countries. AUAS is accredited by the NVAO (Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie), the official quality assurance body for Dutch higher education, which is significant for post-graduation work rights in the Netherlands.

For Nepali students

  • AUAS offers several English-taught bachelor programmes, including International Business at AMSIB and Trade Management Asia, that are directly accessible to Nepali students without Dutch language requirements, lowering a common barrier to studying in the Netherlands.
  • Nepali students who are non-EEA nationals are eligible for the NL Scholarship (formerly Holland Scholarship), a one-time €5,000 grant funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education and open to students enrolling in full-time English-taught programmes at AUAS.
  • Because AUAS programmes are NVAO-accredited, graduates qualify for the Netherlands Orientation Year (zoekjaar), a one-year post-graduation residence permit that gives unrestricted access to the Dutch labour market without needing an employer-sponsored work permit, which is a strong post-study pathway for Nepali graduates.
  • Annual institutional tuition for non-EU international bachelor students is approximately €10,000–€11,000 per year, which is mid-range for Western Europe; combined with Amsterdam's well-developed student housing system and the option to work up to 16 hours per week during studies, the total cost of attendance is more manageable than comparable UK or Australian destinations.
