About Avans University of Applied Sciences

Avans University of Applied Sciences is a large public hogeschool in the Netherlands, ranked best large UAS in the country for 11 consecutive years by Keuzegids HBO.

Avans University of Applied Sciences is a public university of applied sciences (hogeschool) in the Netherlands, with campuses in Breda, 's-Hertogenbosch, and Tilburg. Established in its current form in 2004 through a merger of several institutions, Avans serves more than 30,000 students across 18 institutes and around 40 study tracks. Its oldest predecessor institution, an art academy in 's-Hertogenbosch, dates to 1812.

Avans focuses on practice-oriented, competence-based education. English-taught bachelor programs include International Business, Finance and Control (International), and Environmental Science for Sustainability, Ecosystems and Technology, each spanning four years with mandatory internship periods integrated into the curriculum. The university maintains close ties with regional and national industry partners, and students complete two substantial work placements as part of their degree.

Avans has been ranked the best large university of applied sciences in the Netherlands by the independent Keuzegids HBO guide for 11 consecutive years (2013–2024). It does not appear in global rankings such as QS or Times Higher Education, which is typical for applied sciences institutions of this type across Europe. The main Breda campus places students in a mid-sized Dutch city with good rail connections to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp.

For Nepali students

  • Avans offers three fully English-taught bachelor programs, including International Business and Environmental Science, making it accessible for Nepali students without prior Dutch language proficiency, at an annual non-EEA tuition of approximately €10,308 (~$11,100 USD), which is substantially lower than equivalent degrees in the UK, USA, or Australia.
  • After completing a degree at Avans, international graduates are eligible to apply for the Dutch Zoekjaar (Orientation Year) permit, which allows one year of unrestricted work in the Netherlands without an additional work permit, a meaningful pathway toward European employment or highly skilled migrant status.
  • Avans's mandatory internship model means students graduate with documented Dutch industry experience, which strengthens both local job prospects and the CV for roles back in Nepal or elsewhere; this practical credential is particularly valuable given that Nepali employers and recruiters recognise European work placements.
  • The Netherlands has a well-established South Asian student community at the university level, and Avans's international office provides dedicated housing search support, visa guidance, and orientation programs, reducing the administrative burden that often challenges first-generation international students from Nepal.
