About Maastricht University
Maastricht University is a Dutch research university founded in 1976, known for problem-based learning and one of Europe's most international campuses.
Maastricht University (UM) is a public research university established in 1976 in Maastricht, in the southern Dutch province of Limburg. It is the youngest of the Netherlands' traditional universities and has grown to around 23,000 students across six faculties covering health sciences, law, economics, psychology, arts and social sciences, and science and engineering.
UM is widely recognized for its problem-based learning (PBL) pedagogy, in which small tutorial groups of 10–15 students work collaboratively on real-world cases rather than attending large lectures. This approach is particularly evident in its internationally regarded School of Business and Economics and its Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, which runs one of the few fully English-taught medicine programs in continental Europe.
The university's main campus is compact and spread across the historic city centre of Maastricht, a city of about 120,000 people on the Belgian and German borders. UM ranks #239 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and #131 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, placing it among the top 150 universities globally by the THE measure. With 61% of its approximately 23,000 students coming from outside the Netherlands, it is the most internationally diverse university in the country.

For Nepali students
- Nepali students are eligible for the Maastricht University NL-High Potential Scholarship, a competitive award for non-EU master's students that covers full tuition plus a living stipend of up to €30,625, one of the more substantial scholarship packages offered by a Dutch university.
- The Netherlands grants all graduating international students a one-year Orientation Year permit (zoekjaar), allowing Nepali graduates to remain and seek skilled employment after completing their degree, which is a direct pathway to a Dutch work permit or EU Blue Card.
- Undergraduate tuition for non-EU students in most bachelor programs runs €13,200–€18,400 per year (2025/26), which is moderate relative to UK or US alternatives; the School of Business and Economics and the liberal-arts University College Maastricht are the most popular entry points for South Asian students.
- UM's problem-based learning format rewards students from academically rigorous backgrounds, and its high international-student share (61%, from 134 countries) means there is an established support infrastructure for non-European students adapting to Dutch academic culture.
