About NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences
NHL Stenden is a Dutch university of applied sciences in Leeuwarden, ranked 4th among large hogescholen in the Netherlands, known for hospitality management.
NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences is a state-funded hogeschool (university of applied sciences) formed in 2018 through the merger of NHL Hogeschool and Stenden Hogeschool. Its primary campus is in Leeuwarden, Friesland, with additional campuses in Emmen, Meppel, and Terschelling. The university enrolls approximately 22,000 students from more than 100 countries.
The university offers 70 bachelor programs and 21 master programs across fields including hospitality and tourism management, international business, European studies, social work, and engineering. Its International Hospitality Management program is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and NHL Stenden holds accreditation from the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE). In the 2025 Keuzegids hbo guide, the primary Dutch ranking for applied sciences universities, NHL Stenden placed fourth among the country's large hogescholen, with more programs rated 'excellent' than any peer institution.
Leeuwarden is a mid-sized city in the north of the Netherlands, offering a lower cost of living than Amsterdam or Utrecht. The university also operates international partner locations in Indonesia, Thailand, and South Africa, giving students practical study and internship options abroad.
For Nepali students
- Nepal is a non-EU country, so Nepali graduates are eligible for the Dutch Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) permit, a 12-month post-study visa that gives unrestricted access to the Dutch labour market, a clear pathway to a highly skilled migrant permit and eventually permanent residency.
- NHL Stenden offers the NL Scholarship worth €5,000 for first-year non-EU bachelor or master students, which is open to Nepali applicants and directly reduces the institutional tuition of approximately €10,335 per year.
- The university's strength in hospitality management, international business, and European studies aligns with sectors where Nepali graduates have found employment in Europe, and the campus-wide English instruction removes language barriers common at research universities in the Netherlands.
- Leeuwarden's cost of living is meaningfully lower than the major Dutch cities, and the multi-national student body (100+ nationalities) means Nepali students join a well-established international community rather than a small minority cohort.
