The University of Groningen (RUG) was founded in 1614 and is one of the oldest and largest universities in the Netherlands. It enrolls approximately 31,000 students across 11 faculties, with around one-third of its student body drawn from outside the Netherlands. The university has produced multiple Nobel Prize winners and counts the first Dutch astronaut among its alumni.
RUG's academic strengths are concentrated in three strategic research areas: Energy, Healthy Ageing, and Sustainable Society. Its Faculty of Economics and Business is consistently ranked among Europe's best, and programmes in Economics and Econometrics, Spatial Sciences, and Behavioural and Social Sciences enjoy strong international reputations. The university offers a substantial range of English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes.
Groningen city sits in the northern Netherlands and is a compact, internationally active university town where students make up a significant share of the population. The campus is well-connected by public transport and cycling infrastructure. For Nepali students
- The Eric Bleumink Fund, open to students from developing countries including Nepal, offers individual grants of up to €15,000 for Master's degree programmes at RUG, one of the few university-level scholarships with an explicit developing-country mandate at a Dutch institution.
- Tuition for most standard non-EU undergraduate programmes is €13,500 per year (2025–2026), which is comparatively moderate for a globally top-100 university; Groningen city's lower living costs versus Amsterdam also reduce total study expenses.
- After graduating, Nepali students can apply for the Netherlands Orientation Year permit (zoekjaar), a one-year post-study visa with unrestricted work rights, no job offer or salary threshold required, providing a structured pathway to employment in the EU.
- RUG's strengths in Economics, Energy, and Sustainable Society align with fields where Nepali graduates have strong employment prospects both in Europe and upon return; the university's large international student share (around 34%) means dedicated international student support services are well-established.
