About University of Twente
University of Twente is a public technical university in Enschede, Netherlands, ranked #223 globally (QS 2027) and known for engineering and entrepreneurship.
University of Twente (UT) is a public research university founded in 1961 in Enschede, in the Twente region of the eastern Netherlands. It enrolls approximately 11,300 students across engineering, technology, social sciences, and business programmes, with around 36% of its student body drawn from outside the Netherlands.
UT is primarily a technical university with particular strength in disciplines such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, biomedical technology, and industrial design engineering. The university operates around 400 high-tech labs and three major research institutes, and has spun out more than 1,200 startups, giving it a strong entrepreneurial identity within Dutch higher education.
The main campus sits on a single park-like site on the edge of Enschede, a mid-sized city close to the German border. The campus is largely self-contained, housing student residences, sports facilities, and research centres alongside academic buildings. Enschede is well connected by rail to Amsterdam and other Dutch cities, and the cost of living is notably lower than in Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

For Nepali students
- UT offers the University of Twente Scholarship (UTS) and the Kipaji Scholarship, the latter is specifically open to students from countries including Nepal, providing up to €12,000 toward a Master's programme, making partial funding accessible without relying solely on self-financing.
- Engineering, computer science, and business technology programmes at UT align well with the professional goals of many Nepali students, and tuition for technical bachelor programmes is set at €13,000 per year (2025–2026) for non-EU students, moderate by Western European standards, especially given Enschede's lower cost of living.
- After completing a degree at UT, graduates are eligible to apply for the Netherlands Orientation Year Visa (zoekjaar), which grants one year of unrestricted work rights in the Netherlands without requiring employer sponsorship, providing a concrete post-study pathway in a high-income-country labour market.
- With 36% of students being international and faculty split equally between domestic and international staff, UT has a genuinely international campus environment, which eases the transition for Nepali students arriving without an established local network.
