About Chungnam National University

Chungnam National University is a flagship South Korean public research university founded in 1952, located in Daejeon's Yuseong science district.

Chungnam National University (CNU) is one of ten designated Flagship Korean National Universities, established in 1952 and located in Daejeon, South Korea. It is a comprehensive public research institution with 16 colleges spanning engineering, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, agriculture and life sciences, law, and the humanities. The university has produced over 190,000 alumni and operates more than 80 research institutes.

CNU's campus sits adjacent to the Daedeok R&D Special District (Daedeok Innopolis), South Korea's largest science and technology cluster, home to over 30 government-funded research institutes and more than 400 corporate R&D centers. This proximity shapes strong applied-research programs in nano-engineering, biotechnology, advanced materials, and environmental sciences. The College of Engineering, the university's largest, was designated a State Policy College in 1994 and has received sustained government funding under the Brain Korea 21 initiative.

With a total enrollment of approximately 22,000 students and around 950 international students, CNU is a mid-sized national university with a regional leadership role in central Korea. It ranks in the 851–900 band in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 1001–1200 in the Times Higher Education World Rankings 2026, placing it among the top 20 universities in South Korea.

For Nepali students

  • CNU is a government-run national university where annual undergraduate tuition for international students ranges approximately 3.6–5.1 million KRW (roughly USD 2,600–3,700), making it one of the more affordable university options in South Korea compared to private institutions.
  • Nepali students are eligible for the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS), which CNU participates in and which covers tuition, a living stipend, and airfare; the Korean Embassy in Nepal processes GKS applications annually, giving Nepali applicants a direct channel.
  • South Korea's D-10 job-search visa and the E-7 skilled-worker visa provide post-study work pathways, and graduates from national universities with STEM or engineering backgrounds are well-positioned for roles in the Daedeok Innopolis tech corridor adjacent to campus.
  • CNU's engineering, agriculture, and bioscience programs align with fields where Nepali students have shown strong demand, and the university's TOPIK Level 3 language entry requirement (bachelor's) is achievable within a standard one-year Korean language preparation course.
