About Dongguk University

Dongguk University is a Buddhist-affiliated private university in Jung-gu, Seoul, founded in 1906 and ranked =618 in QS World 2026.

Dongguk University is a private, Mahayana Buddhist-affiliated university established in 1906 as Myeongjin School and granted full university status in 1953. It is located in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the northern slope of Namsan mountain, with upper campus buildings connected directly to Namsan park trails. It is a member of the International Association of Buddhist Universities.

The university is best known nationally and internationally for its Department of Film and Imaging Arts, which houses the Chungmuro Visual Arts Research Center, the most advanced film research facility in South Korea and a historic center of Korean cinema. Its colleges span Humanities, Social Science, Business, Engineering, Natural Science, and Law, and it has more recently added an AI Convergence division. Notable alumni from its Theatre and Film program include actors Choi Min-sik and Han Hyo-joo.

Dongguk's Seoul campus enrolls approximately 12,900 students, with international students comprising around 24 percent of the student body. It is ranked =618 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it among the top mid-tier research universities in South Korea.
