About Hanyang University

Hanyang University is a leading private research university in Seoul, South Korea, founded in 1939 as Korea's first private engineering institute.

Hanyang University (HYU) is a private research university located in Seongdong District, Seoul, founded in 1939 as the Dong-A Engineering Institute, Korea's first private institution to offer engineering and architecture programs. It now enrolls approximately 25,000 undergraduates and 9,500 postgraduates across 15 colleges and 60 departments on its Seoul campus, with a second campus (ERICA) in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province.

The university's strongest academic areas are engineering and applied sciences, where it consistently ranks among the top institutions in South Korea. It also fields competitive programs in business, biomedical sciences, architecture, and data science. HYU ranks 1st among Korean universities in technology transfer revenues and operates specialized research centres in robotics, battery technology, and biomedical sciences.

The Seoul campus is situated in a well-connected urban district east of the Han River, with direct access to the Seoul Metro network. Globally, HYU is ranked 159th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, placing it 6th nationally, and 251–300th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. It hosts approximately 8,000 international degree-seeking students from over 100 countries.

For Nepali students

  • Hanyang's engineering and technology programs (QS subject rank: 126–150th globally) are well-matched to Nepali students seeking careers in IT, energy, or manufacturing, fields where Korean industry connections carry direct employment value.
  • South Korea's D-10-1 job seeker visa allows graduates of Korean universities to remain in Korea for up to two years to find employment, and graduates of QS top-200 universities (Hanyang qualifies) are exempt from points and financial-proof requirements, making the post-study work pathway comparatively accessible.
  • HYU offers the Hanyang International Excellence Awards, which provide tuition reductions of 30–70% for enrolled international students who hold a TOPIK Korean language certificate and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, a realistic route for cost-conscious Nepali students willing to study Korean.
  • Annual undergraduate tuition at HYU ranges roughly KRW 4.8–7.1 million per semester (approximately USD 3,500–5,200 at current rates), which is substantially lower than comparable private universities in the UK, USA, or Australia, making South Korea a cost-competitive destination for Nepali families.
