Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), founded 1398, is one of South Korea's top research universities with a unique Samsung industry partnership.
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), founded in 1398 as the Joseon dynasty's national academy, is one of the oldest universities in East Asia. Reorganised as a modern university in 1946, it now operates two campuses, the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in central Seoul and the Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon, with a combined enrolment of around 35,000 students.
SKKU has a distinctive industry-academia partnership with Samsung Electronics, dating to 1965 and renewed in 1996. This has produced jointly operated programmes in Semiconductor Systems Engineering, Embedded Software, Battery Science, and Artificial Intelligence, giving students direct access to industry mentors and advanced research infrastructure. Annual research funding exceeds USD 450 million, with a significant share coming from Samsung, Hyundai, and Korean government agencies.
In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, SKKU is ranked 87th globally, with subject-level strengths in Medical and Health (=40th), Engineering (68th), and Computer Science (=78th). The QS World University Rankings 2026 place it at =126. It consistently ranks among the top three universities in South Korea in domestic league tables.
