About Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST)
UNIST is a South Korean public science and technology university in Ulsan, founded in 2009, ranked #=310 globally by QS 2026, with all courses taught in English.
Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) is a public research university established by the South Korean government in 2009 in Ulsan, South Korea's industrial capital. It is one of four science and technology institutes funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, alongside KAIST, POSTECH, and DGIST. The campus is compact and purpose-built, with roughly 3,868 students, a notably small and selective institution.
UNIST focuses exclusively on science, engineering, and management of technology. Key academic areas include energy science and engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, biological sciences, and industrial engineering. The university conducts 100% of its undergraduate and graduate courses in English, which is rare among Korean institutions and makes it directly accessible to international applicants without Korean language proficiency.
UNIST is ranked #=310 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 201–250 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. It places particularly strongly in engineering (151–175) and physical sciences (176–200) in THE subject rankings. South Korea's government has heavily invested in UNIST with the explicit aim of placing it among the world's top 10 science and technology universities by 2030.

For Nepali students
- UNIST offers a Global Dream Scholarship to all admitted international undergraduates that covers full tuition (approximately KRW 7,680,000 per year, roughly USD 5,700), a monthly stipend of KRW 130,000, and a daily meal plan, making it one of the most affordable pathways into a top-300 university for Nepali students with strong science backgrounds.
- All courses are taught entirely in English, eliminating the Korean language barrier that blocks access to most Korean universities; Nepali students with strong English and science/math results can apply directly without learning Korean first.
- STEM graduates from accredited Korean universities are eligible for the D-10 job-seeker visa, which as of 2025 allows up to 3 years to find employment in South Korea after graduation, and STEM qualifications offer a priority pathway to permanent residency, giving Nepali STEM graduates a meaningful post-study migration route.
- UNIST's specialisation in energy science, battery technology, semiconductors, and biomedical engineering aligns with high-demand global sectors; graduates entering Korean conglomerates such as Samsung, SK Innovation, or Hyundai command competitive salaries, and South Korea's tech industry actively recruits international STEM talent.
