ASU offers 47 degree programs through eight degree-granting colleges and schools, including strong programs in Education, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Biology, and Social Work. The university hosts the Center for Nanobiotechnology Research and an engineering dual-degree pathway in partnership with Auburn University and UAB. Its doctoral programs in educational leadership, microbiology, and physical therapy have established research profiles. In 2025, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $38 million to the university, the largest single gift in its history.

The city has deep historical significance as a center of the American civil rights movement.
