About Clark Atlanta University

HBCU in Atlanta, GA. Strong business, engineering, and liberal arts programs with focus on social justice.

Clark Atlanta University (CAU) is a private, historically Black university (HBCU) located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was formed in 1988 through the consolidation of Atlanta University, founded in 1865 as the first institution to award graduate degrees to African Americans, and Clark College, founded in 1869 as the first four-year liberal arts college for a primarily African-American student population. The university holds a Carnegie R2 doctoral classification, reflecting high research activity, and is one of only 13 HBCUs with this designation.

CAU offers more than 40 degree programs across four schools: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Social Work, with degrees at the bachelor's, master's, specialist, and doctoral levels. Its Center for Functional Nanoscale Measures has produced more Black Ph.D. graduates in nanoscale science than any other HBCU in the country. Business Administration, Biology, Psychology, and Communications are among its stronger undergraduate programs.

The university sits on a 126-acre urban campus approximately 1.4 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta, a major US city with a large international population and significant employment opportunities. CAU is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium alongside Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Morehouse School of Medicine, giving students access to cross-registration and shared academic resources across these institutions.

For Nepali students

  • CAU's Business Administration and Social Work programs, combined with its R2 doctoral research standing, offer Nepali students pathways into graduate-level study and research in the United States at a university with a moderate acceptance rate of around 64%. International students are eligible for F-1 visas and may work on-campus during studies, and CAU's location in Atlanta provides access to one of the US Southeast's largest job markets for internships and post-graduation employment.
  • Undergraduate tuition is approximately $28,310 per year, which is lower than many comparable private US universities, making it a relatively cost-accessible private institution. More than 90% of CAU students receive some form of financial assistance, and large institutional gifts, including $38 million from MacKenzie Scott, have expanded the university's capacity to offer aid, including to international students through institutional scholarships.
  • As an F-1 student at CAU, Nepali graduates are eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, with STEM degree holders potentially qualifying for a 24-month OPT extension, providing up to three years of US work authorization without requiring employer sponsorship at the point of graduation.
  • Atlanta's diverse, globally connected economy, anchored by major employers in logistics, finance, media, and technology, gives CAU graduates, including Nepali students, a strong local network and practical industry access that smaller or more rural US campuses cannot match.
