About Elgin Community College
Community college in Illinois near Chicago. Strong transfer and workforce development programs.
Elgin Community College (ECC) is a public two-year institution established on January 10, 1949, and located in Elgin, Illinois, about 40 miles northwest of Chicago. Governed as Community College District 509 and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), it serves a 360-square-mile district across five counties with a current enrollment of approximately 10,461 students.
ECC offers more than 130 degrees and certificates spanning university transfer, career-technical, and continuing education tracks. Standout programs include Clinical Laboratory Technology, Histotechnology, Health and Wellness Management, Early Childhood Education, and a newly funded Mechatronics and Automation program backed by $936,000 in federal investment. The college has a guaranteed transfer admission pathway to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Grainger College of Engineering, and alumni have transferred to institutions such as the University of Michigan, Purdue University, and University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The main Spartan Drive campus occupies 100 acres and opened in 1970; ECC also maintains satellite locations in Hanover Park, Burlington, and Streamwood. The college emphasises small class sizes and provides an Intensive English Program, making it accessible to students still developing English proficiency. Peggy Heinrich became ECC's first female president in January 2025.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
All graduates qualify for 12-month OPT. STEM-designated programs (CS, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Sciences) qualify for 24-month STEM OPT extension — 36 months total work authorisation.
For Nepali students
- ECC's annual out-of-state/international tuition is approximately $9,516 (at $396 per credit hour for a 24-credit-hour year), making it one of the more affordable US entry points for Nepali students compared to four-year universities, which typically charge $25,000–$50,000 per year.
- The guaranteed transfer pathway to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Grainger College of Engineering is a concrete benefit: Nepali students who complete two years at ECC can earn an engineering degree from a top-ranked US public university at a fraction of the cost of attending for all four years.
- F-1 students at ECC are eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and, after graduating or transferring to a four-year institution, Optional Practical Training (OPT), providing up to 12 months (or 36 months for STEM graduates) of US work authorisation, directly relevant for Nepali students planning to gain work experience before returning home or pursuing permanent residency.
- The Center for Global Engagement and a homestay program provide structured on-arrival support, reducing the adjustment burden that often affects first-generation international students from Nepal who may be relocating to the US for the first time.
