About Emporia State University
Public university in Kansas. Strong education, business, and liberal arts programs.
Emporia State University (ESU) is a public university established in 1863 in Emporia, Kansas. It enrolls approximately 4,820 students across undergraduate and graduate programs, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1, and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
ESU's strongest programs are in teacher education, accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), and library and information science. Business and nursing are also established undergraduate offerings.
The university's 212-acre campus sits in the small city of Emporia (population roughly 25,000), located about 100 km southwest of Kansas City. ESU is a teaching-focused regional university; it appears in the US News Regional Universities Midwest category rather than national university rankings, which reflects its size and mission rather than program quality in its specialist fields.
