About Fayetteville State University

HBCU in North Carolina. Strong education, business, and engineering programs.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is a public historically Black college and university (HBCU) founded in 1867 by seven Black men, making it the second-oldest state-assisted institution in North Carolina. It is a constituent of the University of North Carolina System and offers more than 60 degrees at the bachelor's and master's levels, along with a doctorate in educational leadership.

FSU has nationally recognized strengths in nursing and teacher education. Its nursing program holds a 95% NCLEX first-time pass rate and is ranked among the best in North Carolina, while FSU is the top HBCU producer of teachers in the state and ranks eighth nationally in that category. The university is also the only institution in North Carolina to hold a Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) Certificate program accredited by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

The campus is located in Fayetteville, North Carolina, a mid-sized city roughly 60 miles south of Raleigh. Fayetteville is home to Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), one of the largest U.S. military installations, which shapes the region's economy and culture. FSU is among the top three employers in Cumberland County and serves a student body where a significant share are military-affiliated or first-generation college students.

For Nepali students

  • FSU's out-of-state undergraduate tuition is approximately $8,756 per year (2025-26), one of the lowest among UNC System universities, making total annual costs significantly more manageable than at flagship US institutions, an important consideration for self-funded Nepali students.
  • The nursing and healthcare programs are a strong draw for Nepali students who plan careers in the US healthcare sector; the 95% NCLEX pass rate signals strong licensure outcomes, and healthcare roles commonly qualify for H-1B sponsorship after graduation.
  • As an accredited US university, FSU students are eligible for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, with STEM-designated programs potentially qualifying for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving Nepali graduates up to three years of US work authorization.
  • The university's high acceptance rate (~82%) and holistic admissions process make it accessible to international applicants who may have strong academic profiles but are seeking a realistic entry point into the US higher education system.
