About Golden West College

Golden West College (GWC) is a public community college in Huntington Beach, California.

Golden West College (GWC) is a public two-year community college in Huntington Beach, California, founded in 1966 as part of the Coast Community College District. It operates on a 122-acre campus and holds regional accreditation, offering associate degrees, career technical certificates, and transfer preparation programs. The college awarded more than 5,000 degrees and certificates in Spring 2023 alone.

Academic offerings span eight interest clusters: Business, Career Education, Health Sciences, Languages and Communication, STEM, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, and Education. The Nursing program is among its most competitive, requiring a separate application alongside the standard international student application. GWC's transfer center maintains articulation agreements with the entire University of California and California State University systems, and students who complete an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) are guaranteed CSU admission with junior standing.

The college sits in coastal Orange County, roughly 40 miles south of Los Angeles. Huntington Beach is a mid-size suburban city with a relatively low cost of living compared to Los Angeles, while still giving students access to Southern California's employment and internship market. Total enrollment for 2024-25 was approximately 20,556 unduplicated students across the year.

For Nepali students

  • GWC offers one of the most affordable pathways into top California universities: completing an Associate Degree for Transfer guarantees admission to a California State University campus with junior standing, and the IGETC certificate satisfies lower-division general education requirements for both UC and CSU, saving Nepali students two years of higher university tuition.
  • International undergraduate tuition for 2026-27 is approximately $502 per unit; at the required full-time load of 12 units per semester, institutional tuition and mandatory fees total roughly $12,100 per year, significantly lower than four-year US universities, making it a cost-effective first step before transferring to a university for a bachelor's degree.
  • F-1 students are eligible to work on campus and, after completing their degree and transferring to a four-year institution, can access Optional Practical Training (OPT) and STEM OPT extensions through the transfer institution, GWC itself does not grant OPT, so post-study work rights depend on the destination bachelor's institution.
  • Health Sciences, Nursing prerequisites, STEM, and Business programs at GWC are common entry points for Nepali students seeking professional careers in the US; the college's international student office provides dedicated advising and GWC is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), ensuring credits transfer reliably.
