About Illinois Institute of Technology

Elite private research university in Chicago. Top engineering and architecture programs.

Illinois Institute of Technology (commonly called Illinois Tech) is a private research university founded in 1890 and located on the Mies Campus in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, roughly three miles south of downtown. The university awards bachelor's, master's, J.D., and doctoral degrees across engineering, computing, architecture, business, law, and the sciences, with total enrollment of 7,502 students as of Fall 2025.

Illinois Tech is primarily a STEM-focused institution: its Armour College of Engineering and College of Computing are its largest academic units, and the university offers more than 306 STEM-designated degree programs eligible for the 24-month OPT STEM extension. The College of Architecture is historically significant, the campus itself was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and the Stuart School of Business offers finance and technology programs. Graduates of the class of 2021 reported a 92.8% employment rate within six months.

The main Mies Campus occupies 120 acres in Chicago and is well-connected by the CTA Green Line. Illinois Tech ranks #117 among U.S. national universities (US News 2026), #301–350 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, and #591 in the QS World University Rankings 2026. For Nepali students

  • Illinois Tech's 306 STEM-designated degree programs make virtually every engineering, computing, and science graduate eligible for the 24-month OPT STEM extension, giving Nepali graduates up to three years of US work authorization after their degree, a significant advantage when seeking employment before pursuing an H-1B.
  • The university automatically considers all admitted international undergraduates for institutional merit scholarships ranging from $40,000 to $100,000 over four years with no separate application required, meaningfully reducing the net cost from the listed tuition of approximately $53,198 per year.
  • With 42–45% of the student body being international (representing 117 countries) and over 60% of graduate students being international, Nepali students will find a globally diverse peer group; Chicago also has an established South Asian community and a large technology and finance job market in proximity.
  • The university's #1 Illinois ranking for economic mobility, lifting students from lower-income backgrounds to top-20% earnings, and its strong graduate employment outcomes make it a cost-effective choice for Nepali families investing in a U.S. STEM degree with a clear return on investment.
