Laney College is a public two-year community college located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland, California. Founded in 1953 and part of the four-campus Peralta Community College District, it is the largest college in the district, enrolling approximately 16,500 students annually. Laney offers associate degrees in more than 20 liberal arts and science fields, alongside career and technical programs in areas such as electrical technology, welding, industrial maintenance, digital design, and medical device engineering. For Nepali students

  • Laney College offers one of the most affordable entry points into a U.S. education: international students pay approximately $9,900 per year in tuition and fees, which is substantially lower than four-year universities, making it a realistic option for Nepali students managing tight budgets.
  • The college has a well-established articulation agreement with University of California campuses, including UC Berkeley; Nepali students who complete 60 transferable units with a strong GPA (2.8+ for non-residents) can apply to transfer into competitive UC degree programs, a cost-effective route to a UC degree.
  • Oakland's highly diverse, multicultural population means South Asian and Nepali communities are present in the surrounding East Bay area, giving students cultural familiarity and support networks outside the classroom.
  • International students on an F-1 visa are eligible to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing their associate degree, providing up to 12 months of authorized U.S. work experience, extendable to 36 months for STEM graduates who transfer and complete a qualifying bachelor's degree.
