About Lawrence Technological University
Private engineering and technology university in Michigan. Strong engineering, architecture, and tech programs.
Lawrence Technological University (LTU) is a private, independent university founded in 1932 in Southfield, Michigan, with early support from Henry and Edsel Ford. It enrolls approximately 3,693 students and is one of only 13 U.S. universities that are comprehensive doctoral, independent, and technologically focused by mission and name.
LTU's academic colleges cover Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and IT, Engineering, and Health Sciences. The university emphasizes experiential learning, paid co-ops, undergraduate research, and small class sizes with direct faculty mentoring. Its sponsored research funding exceeded $9 million in 2023-24, earning it Carnegie's newer R-Research classification.
The campus sits on 107 acres in Southfield, a suburb roughly 20 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, placing students within reach of one of the largest automotive and advanced manufacturing hubs in North America. The university is classified a Best Value School and a Top Performer in Social Mobility by U.S. News and World Report (2025 edition).

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
All graduates qualify for 12-month OPT. STEM-designated programs (CS, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Sciences) qualify for 24-month STEM OPT extension — 36 months total work authorisation.
For Nepali students
- LTU's engineering, computer science, and IT programs are STEM-designated, making graduates eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving Nepali graduates up to three years of US work authorization after graduation to build their career before needing an H-1B sponsor.
- The university hosts over 800 F-1 and J-1 international students from 60 countries and maintains an Office of International Programs that organises cultural events and orientation support, providing a ready peer network for new arrivals from South Asia.
- Merit scholarships ranging from $4,500 to $16,000 per year are automatically considered for all admitted students based on GPA, which can meaningfully offset the annual tuition and fees of approximately $45,900 for a programme otherwise carrying a total cost of attendance around $58,390.
- LTU's location in metro Detroit offers strong industry co-op and internship placement, particularly in automotive engineering, product design, and IT, which are fields where Nepali engineering graduates have historically found US employer sponsorship pathways.
