About New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology
The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, formerly New Mexico School of Mines, is a public university in Socorro, New Mexico, United States.
New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT), founded in 1889 as the New Mexico School of Mines, is a public research university in Socorro, New Mexico, about 75 miles south of Albuquerque. With roughly 1,470 students total, 987 undergraduates and 486 graduate students as of fall 2024, it is one of the smallest dedicated science and engineering universities in the United States.
NMT offers over 30 bachelor's degree programs in engineering, sciences, technology, and management, with particular strength in mining engineering, petroleum engineering, atmospheric physics, astrophysics, hydrology, geophysics, and cybersecurity. The university operates major research facilities including the Magdalena Ridge Observatory, Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, and the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center, giving even undergraduates access to hands-on research infrastructure uncommon at this scale.
Socorro is a small desert city with a population of around 8,000, giving the campus a close-knit environment. US News & World Report ranked NMT #20 among Regional Universities West in its 2026 edition. On QS subject rankings, the university reached #=27 globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering (2026), reflecting genuine depth in that discipline.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
All graduates qualify for 12-month OPT. STEM-designated programs (CS, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Sciences) qualify for 24-month STEM OPT extension — 36 months total work authorisation.
For Nepali students
- NMT's engineering and geoscience programs, particularly petroleum engineering, mining engineering, and hydrology, align well with the technical fields many Nepali students pursue, and the small class sizes (total enrollment under 1,500) mean closer faculty access than at large US universities.
- International undergraduate tuition stands at approximately $31,655 per year (2026-27 academic year per NMT's official fee schedule), which is notably lower than flagship state universities and private colleges in the US, making it a more affordable STEM option for cost-conscious families.
- F-1 students who graduate in a STEM-designated field are eligible for the standard 12-month OPT period plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension (36 months total), which is highly relevant given that the vast majority of NMT's degrees fall on the STEM OPT list, providing meaningful time to gain US work experience after graduation.
- Transfer scholarships of $2,000–$6,000 per year are open to international students on F-1 or J-1 visas who have completed at least 30 US college credits, offering a concrete funding avenue for Nepali students who start at a community college before transferring to NMT.
