About Oregon State University
Major public research university in Oregon. Top engineering, agriculture, and business programs.
Oregon State University (OSU) is a public land-grant research university founded in 1868, located in Corvallis, Oregon. It enrolls approximately 38,125 students across its main campus, OSU-Cascades in Bend, and the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, and is one of only three universities in the United States to hold land, sea, space, and sun grant status.
OSU is particularly strong in engineering, robotics, forestry, and marine science. It was the first university in the United States to establish an AI doctoral program and remains the only US institution offering doctoral programs in both robotics and AI; its Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CoRIS) Institute has over 25 faculty and 180 graduate students. The College of Forestry is consistently ranked among the top programs globally, and the university reported $422 million in annual research expenditures.
The main campus in Corvallis sits in the Willamette Valley, approximately 85 miles south of Portland. OSU offers nearly 200 degree programs across 11 colleges and runs one of the largest online degree platforms in the US through OSU Ecampus, delivering over 120 degrees to students in more than 50 countries.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
All graduates from CRICOS-registered programs qualify for 12-month Optional Practical Training (OPT). STEM-designated programs (CS, Engineering, Data Science, Mathematics, Sciences) qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — 36 months total of US work authorisation.
For Nepali students
- OSU's engineering and computer science programs are STEM-designated, meaning F-1 graduates qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT, giving up to 3 years of US work authorization after graduation, which is valuable for Nepali students seeking international work experience.
- The university offers merit scholarships for international undergraduates of up to $6,000 per year ($24,000 total over four years), reducing effective annual tuition from the listed ~$34,983 to around $29,000 for eligible students.
- OSU's world-leading robotics and AI programs, combined with strong computer science and engineering tracks, align well with the STEM fields most Nepali students pursue in the US, and the university's research funding ($422 million annually) supports graduate research assistantships that can offset costs for postgraduate applicants.
- Corvallis is a mid-sized university town with a relatively lower cost of living compared to major US cities, which helps manage overall expenses; the university's proximity to Portland's growing tech sector also provides internship and employment pipelines for graduating students.
