About SUNY Plattsburgh

SUNY liberal arts college in Plattsburgh, NY. Strong business, education, and STEM.

SUNY Plattsburgh is a public university founded in 1889 and part of the State University of New York system, one of the largest public university systems in the United States. Reclassified from a college to a university in 2023, it enrolls approximately 4,561 students across undergraduate and graduate programs within three schools: Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, and Education, Health and Human Services.

The School of Business and Economics holds AACSB accreditation, a distinction held by fewer than 5% of business schools worldwide, making it one of the stronger draws for international students pursuing degrees in business administration, finance, accounting, or international business. The university also offers programs in hospitality management (which requires 600 hours of industry experience), computer science, environmental science, and speech-language pathology at the graduate level.

The campus sits on the western shore of Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, New York, roughly 60 miles south of the Canadian border and about 20 miles from Burlington, Vermont. The surrounding North Country region offers a distinct four-season environment. U.S. News and World Report ranked SUNY Plattsburgh tied #49 among Regional Universities in the North for 2024-2025.

For Nepali students

  • SUNY Plattsburgh automatically awards partial merit scholarships to every accepted international student at the time of admission, no separate application is required, which lowers the net cost relative to the sticker price of approximately $17,000 in tuition per year for non-resident students.
  • The AACSB-accredited business programs and STEM-eligible majors such as computer science allow eligible graduates to apply for a 3-year STEM OPT extension after the standard 12-month OPT period, giving Nepali students up to four years of authorized post-study work experience in the United States.
  • With a 78% acceptance rate and a 15:1 student-faculty ratio, SUNY Plattsburgh is accessible to students with solid but not leading academic profiles, and the smaller campus size means more direct faculty interaction than at large research universities.
  • The university draws students from over 70 countries, and its Global Education Office provides dedicated support services for international students navigating visa, enrollment, and payment processes, including Flywire for international fee payments in local currency.
