About UNC Wilmington
Public liberal arts university in Wilmington, NC. Strong business, education, and STEM programs.
The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is a public doctoral university founded in 1947 and one of 17 institutions in the UNC System. With approximately 19,895 students enrolled as of fall 2025, it offers undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs across four colleges and a graduate school.
UNCW has particular strength in marine and coastal sciences, operating a dedicated Center for Marine Science and offering B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs in marine biology. It was the first U.S. university to offer a bachelor's degree in coastal engineering, and in 2022 launched a Ph.D. in Applied Coastal and Ocean Sciences. Business and education graduate programs have also advanced in U.S. News rankings.
The 650-acre campus sits a short drive from the Atlantic coast and the Cape Fear River estuary, giving students direct access to marine and wetland field sites. Wilmington is a mid-sized city with a comparatively lower cost of living than major metro university towns on the East Coast.

For Nepali students
- UNCW's marine biology, coastal engineering, and environmental science programs are distinctive specialisations not widely available in Nepal, offering Nepali students access to research infrastructure, including field stations on the Atlantic coast, that does not exist at home.
- International undergraduate F-1 students are automatically considered for a merit scholarship of $2,000–$5,000 per academic year with no separate application required, and a Global Student Ambassador Scholarship of $2,000 is open to enrolled F-1 students.
- Out-of-state tuition at UNCW is approximately $25,500 per year (2025-26), which is lower than many comparable U.S. public universities, making it a more affordable option for Nepali families paying international rates.
- After completing a STEM-designated degree (marine biology, computer science, coastal engineering, and others qualify), F-1 graduates are eligible for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT), providing a meaningful post-study work window in the United States.
