University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) is a public research university and the only public university in Boston, founded in 1964. It is part of the five-campus University of Massachusetts system and enrolls approximately 15,575 students across undergraduate and graduate programs.
The university is recognized as one of the most ethnically diverse research universities in the Northeast United States. Graduate programs in nursing, public affairs, business, and education have been ranked among the top 100 by U.S. News & World Report, with the Master of Nursing ranked No. 52 nationally in 2024–25. The College of Science and Mathematics offers strong programs in computer science, biology, and environmental sciences.
UMass Boston occupies a 100-acre campus on Columbia Point, a peninsula overlooking Boston Harbor, adjacent to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
