About University of North Dakota
Public research university in North Dakota. Strong engineering, business, and education programs.
University of North Dakota (UND) is a public research university established in 1883 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, six years before North Dakota achieved statehood. With a fall 2025 enrollment of 15,844 students and a Carnegie R1 classification (very high research activity), it is the state's flagship university and the only institution in North Dakota with both a law school and a medical school.
UND's most distinctive academic asset is the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, which operates the largest collegiate flight training fleet in the world with more than 110 aircraft and simulators. UND was also the first university globally to offer a degree in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/drone) operations. Beyond aviation, UND offers strong programs in engineering, health sciences, law, education, and energy research through its Energy and Environmental Research Center.
The Grand Forks campus spans 521 acres and 240 buildings in a mid-sized city on the Minnesota border. The university's endowment stood at $471.4 million as of 2025. UND competes in NCAA Division I athletics and its men's ice hockey program has won eight national championships.

For Nepali students
- UND's globally recognised aviation and aerospace programs are a concrete draw for Nepali students interested in commercial aviation, drone technology, or aerospace engineering, fields with strong OPT and STEM OPT eligibility that allow up to three years of US work experience after graduation.
- Out-of-state undergraduate tuition sits around $15,570 per year (2024-25 IPEDS), making UND considerably more affordable than flagship universities in major US cities, while still carrying an R1 research designation and a recognised professional school in aviation.
- UND offers merit-based international scholarships of up to approximately $6,000 per academic year for eligible undergraduate students, which can meaningfully reduce the cost burden for Nepali families.
- Grand Forks has a relatively low cost of living; estimated on-campus room and meal costs run around $11,758 per year, keeping the total annual cost of attendance more manageable than at many US universities.
